my family and I had to put our 11 year old sheltie to sleep in November due to cancer in the liver. she went through a lot of pain and a painful biopsy and 5 straight nights in the vet before they found out she was too sick to recover
that being said, makes me feel good to see your dog is doing good
Today has been one of the worst days of my life, for me and for my dog.
I have a Jack Russell Terrier named Sonny, he is eight years old and is my best friend.
over the weekend I noticed he had been losing some weight, and he was also not acting like he normally does. So yesterday I tried to take him to the vet but they were too busy too see him so i made an appointment for today at noon.
So I took him to the vet and after he had an X-Ray and some bloodwork done we made a startling discovery. He has a very large tumor on his spleen that is pushing his other organs forwards and is possibly cancerous.
My vet instructed me to go to an animal hospital about an hour away from me to perform an emergency surgery on him.
When I took him there he got more bloodwork done, an Ultra Sound, and some terrible news.
If Sonny does not have the surgery then he will die very soon, if he does have the surgey there is the risk he may not make it.
They are starting the surgery in forty five minutes, when they open him up they will know if it is cancerous, and if it is, then theres the possiblity of it spreading to all of his organs.
In one hour I will know the likely fate of my dog.
heres a picture of him from a product review:
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you to all of you.
Hi Tuck,i'm real sorry to hear about your dog.I have a freind with an 13 yr old dog with a very similair problem, and the biggest fear was the age of the dog under a general anasthetic.Anyway,it did survive the op. and is still going strong. So i hope that gives you a bit of encouragement.
I too love animals, and peolple who don't have pets, don't really know how hard it is as they get on.They're a part of the family.
Oh my, I wasn't sure if I should read this thread, anything to do with dogs just breaks my heart, but I'm glad that by the time I saw it, there was good news!
Poor little Sonny, what a beautiful looking dog! Nothing bad should happen to a dog that cute! I love how you described him as your best friend, that's how I introduce my dog to people!
I'm hoping he comes home to you soon, it's such a strange feeling when you have no idea what's going on at the vets, not knowing if he's okay, or lonely. When my dog broke her leg, the vets let us come and visit her everyday, I'm not sure if two kids running around the vet was pleasant for them but we liked it!
As someone else said, post some pics up when Sonny gets home! I wish you and you pup well, get better soon Sonny!
Since their open 24 hours a day, I plan on calling in a couple hours to check up on him, and around 9:30 am after the doctor examines him again. I probably will be able to take him home Thursday night.
thanks to all of you for your support and kind words.

I just wanted to add, I know how much your dog means to you. I have an 11 year old coonhound/beagle mix named Roscoe. Somebody had dumped him on the street when he was only a few months old. I've grown up with this dog. I'm going to miss him terribly when he goes.
