  • Dusting products health hazards???

Some of the products we use dust. After buffing for an entire day, all that dust works it's way into my nose, clogging it up, and ultimately I know it's getting in my lungs also.

Has anyone ever done any testing to show any hazards to this? I know it's bad for you, anything entering your body like this has to be bad. But I'm curious to know, how bad it is for you? Has there ever been any studies or anything? Has this been covered before?

I'm sure it cleans out pretty easily after a few days.

But I'd like to know this too. I doubt we'll find out for a while until some health issue gets publicity..

Might want to look into an N95 respirator with a valve, like this:

      Moldex N95 Respirators

3M also makes some of course....

That sounds good in therory. But to be completely honest, I would never wear something like that. When temps get 100+ as they do very often down here in Texas, that mask would irritate the cra* out of me. Heck, even 90* days would be rough. The likelyhood of me wearing that is about zero. That would be like wearing a jacket through the summer.

I'd just like to know if anything has been studied about this. What am I doing to my body by inhaling all that dust?

Yeah I agree I woulndt wear the mask every, it just wouldnt be comfortable for a long time or in the crazy heat down here. Im not to sure if it would really be a problem as I havent really thought about it much but it does make sense...just hold your breath while polishing I think the smoking might do more harm than the dust though haha

Heat is always the problem with a respirator....

Just get one of those disposable masks.... I imagine they're more comfortable

I think some of the compounds can affect the nervous system. I know after 8+ hours of buffing I'm a little out of it. The old 3M rocks in a bottle was really bad.

I was actually thinking about starting a thread this week to see what others use for a respirator. I have those dust masks but they don't seem to do anything.

If you are buffing inside make sure to have good air movement. When I work outside I don't have an issue with dusting. If I need to I have used a mask mostly on boats though. Always read your MSDS sheets. Hope this helps Jim

                    Re: Dusting products health hazards???

I like protecting my lungs every three or four months with a fresh coat of NXT

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                    Remove swirls my friends.

Meguiars has all the MSDS info online.

I wear a regular face mask from the hospital when polishing... the only time I might not wear it is for a quick inspection/test spot session

i usually wear a mask even when detailing, especially when working with apc or degreasers, if they can break down grim think of what can it do to your lungs "Better Safe Than Sorry" in the long run. Yeah their are annoying though and looks funny sometimes I look like if I were to do a surgery on the car: mask, apron, ear plugs, and goggles lol

haha the other day that's what happened to me.. I did a couple test spots with no 'protection' and in front of the client... he went inside to do something for a few mins and came out to find me with goggles, ear plugs and a mask.. he said something along the lines of "oh fook, hope she survive the surgery"

Ok. Just had a thought in my head. Since the products are VOC complaint, would it not be that the chemical substances be free of any cancer/etc causing chemicals?
