  • Family walked away

This 2008 Ford Expedition was sitting still on a off ramp and was hit form behind by a Volvo S60 doing about 55 MPH and never lifted. The family in the Expedition walked away with only a black/blue mark. the air bag in the Volvo was deployed and the driver had a few minor scratches.

Yes they use more gas but in any other smaller unibody vehicle this story would have had a more tragic ending.

It's amazing how pliable metal can be at those speeds. Where are the pics of the Volvo? From 55 to a dead stop/crash, that's pretty major.

Glad the families made it out ok but Im confused why you said any smaller unibody vehicle would of had a more tragic ending?? You do realize a vehicle does not need to be big and have a frame to be safe, right? Volvo probably has a uni body and it sounds like it faired well.

Yes volvo s 60 is a unibody, look at the last pic, on a undamaged vehicle the rear rails extend about 3 feet back from the rear axel to the rear body panel, this rail collapsed about 2-2 1/2 feet and the rail on a expedition is very heavy. a smaller full frame like your jeeps or a unibody vehicle in my opinion would have traveled 2 to 3 times further into the pass compartment. I have some jeep frame damage photos at work I will post for you. I am just commenting that you have a much better chance to walk away in a full frame larger SUV.

SHYNEMAN, your not far from me at all!

The family was lucky enough to walk away, SUV's are great for situations like this but unfortunately they also have a tendancy to roll alot easier then a regular car. We've had a couple accidents over here in Lancaster in the past year where a sedan and an SUV were involved that unfortunately included fatalities in both vehicles, I believe it's the luck of the draw.
We had a bad accident a few years ago on the Columbia-Wrightsville (462) bridge where an older (70's) Ford sedan struck an Expidition right behind the front drivers side wheel, everyone in the expidition were not injured except for a minor leg injury suffered by the driver, all refused to go to the hospital. Unfortunately the driver of the sedan passed away on scene. If the sedan would have hit a second later I'm positive the outcome would have been a whole different story!

                Did this happen on 83?

Well That is Good News To Hear!!
When I saw the title I thought you meant your family was leaving you.
That looks like a nasty accident.
It could have been a lot worse.
Glad to hear everything is okay!!

Great to hear. I have to see this stuff everyday and sometimes its not a happy ending. I guess working for an insurance company makes you a little more careful on the road.

Volvo's are one of the safest cars on the road. Glad to hear everyone's okay.
