  • Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

So this morning while I was sleeping I was having this odd dream about detailing my car....never had a dream where I was detailing. Then I woke up and what was playing on the TV (Acts as one of my alarm clocks)??
Lo and behold it was a Turtle Wax Ice infomercial!!

I kinda felt like that turtle (no pun intended) from the Comcast commercial who had the bad dream. In my sleepy daze (I'm not a morning person at all) I muttered some choice words at the TV and got a raised eyebrow from the equally sleepy wife.
"What are you nagging at?" said my wife.
"Stupid Turtle Wax, they gotta ruin my morning with that infomercial (One guy said he'll never touch Mothers or MEGUIAR'S products again after trying out the Ice), I hear that stuff isn't all it's cracked to be". I reply to her.
"You're obsessed!!" Is all she says. Not the first time she said this either.

Has anyone seen this infomercial? I almost bought TW Ice last year before I got hooked on Meguiar's and I've seen mixed reviews on it.

On a side note, A while back while picking up some stuff from Pep Boys the wife out of nowhere said..."I've heared Meguiar's is really good." This coming from a person who thinks a car wash is letting it sit out in the rain!!!

Haha! Your article persuaded me to search the net for the Turtle Wax infomercial. I have to admit that it is a good piece of marketing. Barbara Terry does a great job. If she came knocking at my door, I'd probably buy a bottle of the stuff from her.

I have never tried Ice polish, so cannot comment on the product. There is a lengthy discussion of it over at Autopia.

I imagine that the product will sell well (at least initially) because it is apparently easy to apply and because it can be used on all the exterior surfaces (paint, chrome, plastic). This is going to appeal to the ordinary consumer. The infomercial claims 6 months durability for Ice; but at least on the Autopia thread, people are saying to expect 2-4 weeks, though at the end of the thread someone observes that it was recently reformulated to improve durability.

It seems to me that the one product in Meguiar's line that competes directly against TW Ice is Ultimate Quik Wax. From what I have read on this forum, Quik Wax has all the same, if not better, selling points--ease of use, no wax residue, may be applied on metal and plastic trim, great shine, etc. Perhaps Meguiar's should create its own infomercial where everyone turns in their Ice for UQW.

Yeah I was expecting to see Billy Mays or Mr Sham Wow to pop out of the wood work and put their two cents in.

I've been reading around here and elsewhere on seeing how well this product lives up to the hype and from what I've seen is that it's hard to see where you're applying it and that the durability is not all that great with hardly any beading one would expect after a nice wax job. Also it appears that it doesn't bring out a shine as well as traditional waxes do be it Meg's or brand X, this could be user error or the product itself.

Then you have that guy bashing Meguiar's name.....whatever dude, does TW have an online forum where TW employees take their time to educate you on how to properly use their product and the steps that need to be taken to ensure maximum quality? Does TW hold free classes and TNOG type events to show HANDS ON how to use their products? I think I'll stick to Meg's

I personally don't want to wax my car in 15 to 20 minutes. Heck even 4 hours I would feel as if I'm not doing a good job or that I'm missing something.

Thanks for the link Akimel, it should be interesting on what they have to say!

Re: Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

Funny thing, but it was the TurtleWax Ice line that eventually brought me to Meguiars and this online forum. Just after Xmas, Target was selling a lot of promotional Xmas gift packs for clearance. The TurtleWax Ice Car Care kit was among those items. After a couple of weeks, the price went from 50% off to 75% off and I couldn't resist, I bought 4 of the kits. Great, I thought, I'm set for the next several years for wax, wash, and detailer. Around this time I also saw the TurtleWax Ice liquid claybar, read up on it, and bought it to try on my new Accord.

The results were not optimal, and I was left with a car covered in a milky residue that I could not remove with washing. On my neighbor's recommendation, I took my car to a local wash and wax place and had the car properly clayed and detailed. Now as you all know, when you pay someone to perform an aesthetic service like this, you're only inviting karma disaster. Sure enough, someone backed into my bumper the same evening, precipitating a chain of events that included a bumper cover replacement which spawned a botched courtesy car wash at the paint & body shop, resulting in a scratched and swirled finish that eventually led me to (ta-daa) MOL.

6 degrees of separation. But had it not been for TurtleWax Ice, I never would have found my inner car guy!

I've tried Turtle Wax Ice Liquid Polish and the Liquid Claybar. The claybar works eh, still have about a third of the bottle sitting in the garage. In my opinion the liquid polish ***** on paint. I'm not bashing them just giving my opinion. I still have the almost full bottle and I'm trying to decide what to do with it. I didn't see any difference after I used it. It is nice if you want to wax frequently, because it doesn't layer - every new layer will clean off the previous layer. And it is nice in that it doesn't leave dust and you can use it on exterior plastic. But the pros end there. NXT Tech Wax 2.0 kicks Ice butt hands down. It's easy to sell because it's packaged up all pretty. Their marketing may be good, but in my experience, Turtle Wax Ice still leaves much to be desired.

This is true for me too. I bought the Yaris new in late '06 and the fellas over on the Yaris forum were talking up ICE. I bought both the 'polish' and the QD. It was easy enough to apply but didn't really last long. Wash the car and it was goine. Also, I felt that 'polish' wasn't really what the product did. Back when I used to take better care of my cars, I was a Megs user. I found this forum and stocked back up on Megs products. All good now...

Just saw the Ice informocial this morning. Will agree a slick presentation. They had a couple of people specifically saying they will not go back to Meguiars. I just shook my head.

Re: Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

I find it funny as they were advertising it as a kit (polish, QD equviant, tire and wheel products....I think there was something else they had but I was sleepy and didn't catch it), what did catch my intrest is that they did not have the liquid clay or clay bar that is also in that product line.

I'm watching this now online and all I can say is wow!
When they to the 50/50 comparison with Mothers I almost lost my lunch with the way they caked on the Mothers wax!
Notice when they run water over the hood there's no beading, it looks like there's no wax on it at all.

I'll stick with Meg's...For me taking all day to detail your car is a sign of taking pride in you ride, weather you have a classic, sports, muscle, exotic, or even just a common daily driver like me, a car crazy person will be able to spot a thorough detail over a ICE detail anyday.

Why do they need a half hour infomercial? It's as if they're begging and pleading with consumers to buy their product, which "works better than all other conventional car polishes and waxes." If the product really was amazing, it would sell itself. And the ability to wax in the sun? What is the big deal with that? "Oh, I just washed my car in the shade, now I think I'll move in the sun to wax it?" What the hell? I think they do it for car show enthusiasts who aren't always able to wax in the shade once they get to a show, but if they waxed with NXT 2.0 beforehand and hit it up with UQD or even Turtle Wax Ice Spray Detailer (which can be used in direct sun, I'm not sure UQD can), it would look so much better than if they did a quick "wax" with Ice Liquid Polish. My point is, it's so much easier to sell people on hype than it is to sell them on the actual product. The product has to sell itself.

Re: Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

All I can say is that I've used various TW supplies, and had poor results, including things from their common and ICE lines. Only stuff I've had success with is their F21 interior detail spray. As for the ICE liquid wax (they call it polish ), I liked it, but that was before I knew about Meguiars .
Yes, it's easy on and easy-off, but the consistency and color are exactly like Johnson's baby oil, and after everything is applied, the car has a nice greasy shine to it...the shine looks fairly artificial, and not as "one" with the paint as a carnauba or NXT might be.

A few weeks ago, I saw a picture of someone's white car which had used ICE, and it looked fairly nice, so I'll have to try it on a friend's white car before I render my verdict. For now though, the ICE has been sitting at the bottom of my "Regret pile" (Don't we all have one? The pile of products you purchased and do not use), underneath the Meguiars stuff that I use on my own car.

I'll have to youtube for that commercial...always interesting to see how people market their supplies, and to call out their lies !

I dont care for Turtle Ice. I though Turtle Platinum worked better, especially the spray detailer which I hear they dont make anymore.

Re: Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

I have tried the TW Ice Line. I found the car wash very nice. The Ice "polish" easy but extremely short lived. The QD is okay but UQD is hands down my favorite. The Liquid Claybar is equivalent to a paint cleaner. Ok for quick clean but an actual clay bar is miles better. These products are fine for occasional users, but Meguiars makes far superior products by comparison. Really in OTC, a better competitor is Mothers to Meguiars. However, it shows confidence in a company's products that Meguiars has an open forum to discuss other competitiors products.

Re: Woke up to Turtle Wax Ice!!

Don't get me wrong, TW does have some really good products from what I gather and I'm not trashing thier name but that infomercial really got under my skin at o'dark thirty this morning.
You could tell the people were reading off of a script, half the time it looked like they were just wiping the towel and applicator around with no product on them or the cars. What made it even worse for me is that they filmed it in PA....I can spot the emisions and inspection sticker anywhere!

It would have been funny though if she came up to me to talk "ICE"

Barbara Terry: Hello, I see your using the all new patent pending Turtle Wax Ice Polish on your car...what kind is it anyway?

Underdawg: Yes I am, this here is a 2004 Ford Focus ZX3, it's the wifes and she likes it when I detail it.

BT: That's great, your such a nice husband to keep your wifes car looking top notch! So how do you like the "ICE"

Underdawg: Well I wanted to try it out since there's so much hype in this product I had to "take one for the team and try it out.

BT: Oh really and what team are you on?

Underdawg: I'm on the Meguiar's team, Dang near everything I learned about how to take care of my cars I learned from them.

BT (face is getting alittle flushed now): So how does ICE stack up to your Meguiars routine?

Underdawg: Well it doesn't last as long, I can't see where I'm putting it and where to wipe it off, and it doesn't bead like Meg's.

BT: Ohh well it does go on and off alot easier then Meguiars, Mothers, and other brands. It'll cut down on the time it takes you to polish your car.

Underdawg: True but I like spending all day with my car, maybe you should check Meg's out, I can see you're car crazy and they can show you how a properly prepped and shined car would look like.
Have the guys like Mike Phillips, Nick Chapman, Superior Shine, and MANY others to name work on your favorite show car to see the true shine and clarity that Meguiar's will do over this ICE stuff.
Hey you could even become a Meg's spokeswoman!

                            BT: (getting redder) Well....um....o

                            Screen goes blank

Sorry this is me just poking fun at TW since they woke me up this morning. No offense to TW or Barbara Terry, they just gave me a bad dream and that's my payback.
