Re: DO you get hung up on what type of cars you detail?

All I have to do is clean my fiancee's or her parents' windows and they are jumping up and down. Guess I'm lucky?

Still a fancy car would be nice to detail eventually...

I think Joe and Francis summed it up very well. While I have not detailed any crazy exotic cars yet, I do enjoy a Car Guy's reaction much more than the owner who just pays, and then hops in the car and leaves.

I do find I enjoy my work more when I'm working on a car that I like. I also like to work on darker colored and metalic paints.

Re: DO you get hung up on what type of cars you detail?

I have only detailed one exotic car in my life and it was a Porsche priced at $120,000. The owner was a good friend of my Dad and this helped me get the job.

My mian concern was to be real careful, obviously using a good shampoo, 2 buckets, grit guards etc.

The car was only 3 months old and it was never touched and there was minimal swirling. So I just finished it up with Show Car Glaze and Gold Class Liquid Wax.

The owner was nice and all but this is one of eleven exotic cars he owns and he really had a "its just a car attitude" and really didnt care to take note of how deep and rich the finish looked after I got done.

It was pretty much a simple thank you, a payment of 80 dollars and I was on my way.

            I hate doing "Piggy Cars"
They don't appreciate anything (I'm guessing)

How hard is it to NOT throw up in your car?
Or let your kids have food fights in the car after every trip home from school!

As long as you don't treat your car like a dumpster I'm more than happy to clean it for you!

Re: DO you get hung up on what type of cars you detail?

Even though I haven't done this for very long, I've done some expensive cars, not exactly exotic, but expensive.

One of my regular clients is a millionaire/entrepreneur and the very first time I washed his cars he didn't even come out to look at them, his housekeeper told me to pull them in the garage and gave me money and that was it. I can think of maybe one or two times out of more than 50 I've washed his cars that he's come out and even looked at them.

I think I really does depend on the owner not the car. This past weekend I detailed a 1997 BMW 328i, not a crazy exotic car, nothing fancy. The guy talked to me for about 45 minutes when he got to my house about what I was going to do to the car, my products, his love for the car, etc. That was something that I really enjoyed because I knew that he trusted me with his "baby." When he came to pick it up he was speechless and walked around and around for 20-30 minutes just saying how good it looked.

But then again I've had customers that paid me before I even started and just tell me to put the keys in the mail box and we never speak again.

So yes, I kinda know what your talking about and agree that it does get a little upsetting.

I want to do daily drivers. No exotic cars for me. The owners are so appreciative about how much improvement I can get for them.

I understand. I got more satisfaction over a free detail once over a $100 detail I did a few days prior. It's all in the owner's appreciation. BTW I do NOT detail cars for a living, just as a hobby/learning interest.

Re: DO you get hung up on what type of cars you detail?

I probably don't belong in this conversation either as I don't have a lot of cars under my belt and so far nothing worth more than 50k or 60k. I have worked in different industries in rich communities where most thought they were above me, did not try to hide that they felt that way and did not appreciate my hard work. It is very frustrating. I'm a lot like many of you and it bugs me when people don't appreciate things I do, but that's just the way it is. I still dream of doing nice cars and do not want to clean up other peoples neglected and trashed vehicles. It's too much work for too little wage and while they may appreciate seeing it all cleaned up and shiny, it will soon be back the way it was or worse very soon. At my age I'll take the unappreciative high end customers any day and to see my reflection in their paint is what will make me happy. Of course they can't all be expensive cars or rich people. An average person's satisfaction and appreciation give me a real boost.

I do know this; anything any of us do in life, anything we work hard doing and strive to do better each time we do it is for ourselves and not really for the customer even though we try to please them all. In the end it is about Superior Shines' sig. Sometimes it's just difficult to remember that.

And to all, a good night!
