If you own a home pay extra toward towards principal (get more equity)
Reduce the amount of credit cards
Maintain a healthy debt to asset ratio

See, you say reduce the amount of credit cards but thats just the thing. I've never had any thus, I have basically no credit. BTW, Im 29.

I'm going to have to get and use 1 or two credit cards purely to show I can handle credit and it will up my score. Besides the new car, I have no debt. Daddy co-signed.

And to the guy who said I was in no shape to be thinking about a house, exactly!! I want my credit to get to where a house is an option!

How long have you been paying on the car? If the answer is for three or more years, the lenders will look at that positively. You are showing for a decent amount of time, you can handle paying down debt. Go online and run a credit report that gives you a credit score, who knows, the car loan may result in you having decent credit.

You may want to go to a site to see what your credit rating is to find out if the 9 month car payment is enough.

Really? Wow! Even my friends with cruddy credit get them. I get so many I am tempted to call the credit agencies and ask them to no longer release my credit score to stop all my junk mail.

Well, since it is free to inquire about your credit score, you may as well run it just to see where you stand for now to give you an idea of a starting point.

You can get a free one from the credit report agencies. One is allowed per agency per year.
Since there are three agencies you can get a free one every 4 months if you rotate them

If you go to: http://www.annualcreditreport.com you can get 1 free report from each of the 3 agencies once a year if you live in California (may work in other states too).

It cracks me up to see you young guys getting all worried over $1,000 on this card, $2,000 on that card, etc. Unfortunately, I remember when life was so simple.

Here's the honest truth... pay all your bills on time and leave 25% available credit on each of your credit cards. After 18 years of that, my score was 800+.

Also guys, don't feel bad that you're not getting credit card offers at 0% in the mail any more. Many of the big banks simply stopped doing it. You guys out there with lots of available credit... have you looked at your statements lately? I lost over $30k in credit limits in April alone. 8-)
