    Gang,

Late notice, but the 48 Hours slated for tonight on CBS may have my jail in it and you may see my badge.....LOL.

Really, it's about a murder in Arizona and the alledged person ended up in our jail here in Yreka and that's what it's about.....

Got a free 48 Hours hat out of the deal as I was working and they filmed my patch, my badge and my fingers working the control board.

who knows, may not have us, never know.

Well, they didn't show much of our area.

I did take her photo and my partner booked her.....

Oh well, attorneys may not have let them show much.....

It was cool though, showed the outside of the jail. they did interview her at our jail but didn't show anything.

Good night guys, don't forget to set your clocks forward!

That mugshot didn't look like one. She was totally smiling. Did you take that one?

                  Nappers,

I see that we share the same career field. I have been a Deputy Sheriff now for almost 16 years now.

Very cool, I aspire to become a San Diego Deputy Sheriff after I finish this semester. I am hoping to work the streets though, after the 2 year stint in the jails.

I have worked both the jail and the streets. Having the jail experience is very valuable for street cops. Working in a jail you really develop your IPC (inter-personal communication) skills. Good luck, it's an exciting and rewarding career. Maybe soon we can trade professions, you can be the cop and I'll be a detailer.

I took that one, my partner booked her (the main booking, address, medical questions, classification etc). I remember to tell her to look up at the camera and she did that little smirk and I pushed the button. (we have digital remote camera run by the computer). She was giddy during the whole process. Did not shed one tear that I'm aware of.

15 years for me, started at the ripe old age of 25, can't wait to retire Got a lot of fishing to do. Currently I am a Corporal, Facility Training Officer, I was on the Gang Unit but quit after 14 years because the current Sgt. (patrol) wasn't doing anything with it and I got very frustrated with him and told MY Lt. that I was done.

I blew my knee out twice so, academy and street is out for me. Just be careful in the jails and use your head. It's good to start in the jail, then you learn good security practices. I've been to several training (for both patrol and jails) and the trainers say, if you want to learn good security practices, watch a jailer. I hope you make it Mark, it's a good field of work with good benefits, pay aint the greatest for what you do but good benefits are good. 3% @ 50 is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

                            Hey Mark,

As being retired from being a deputy sheriff. I can say that one should not discount the experience of being a Corrections Officer. I was dual certified. At first I did not want any part of working in the jail. But, after about 45 days, I found a home. It was great. Then when I was promoted to Transport it was even better. Driving all over the state picking up prisoners on our local warrants. If the pay is the same being on the streets or in the Jail. The jail is not that bad of a place to be stationed.

Nappers, sorry I missed the show.

Jail is not as horrid as you may think, depending where you start that is. I toured Los Angeles Main jail and some of the positions just was not fun.

                              Since working the jail:

Done SWAP (Sheriff's Work Alternative Program) Take inmates out and work with CalTrans (picking trash on the freeways, cleaning rest area's etc).

Transport inmates throughout the state. We usually meet at Sacramento Countys' RCCC (Rio Consumnes Correctional Center) and do a big swap meet with other agencies.

Bailiff - Civil, Juvenille, Criminal, et al!

Acting Shift Supervisor (make your own acronym) your in charge when the Sarge is off.

Training Officer, mold newbies into the way you want them.

Gang Unit, learned a lot in the early years but haven't done squat in a lot of years and quit the unit. I went to Los Angeles for a week long training and did a ride along with LA County Safe Streets Bureau. It was a blast, went through Watts, Compton etc. Little Scary at first.

Jail, we rotate between 5 stations every 3 hours while on duty, 12 hour shifts, get 3 or 4 days off a week. Booking, Main Housing, Escort, Central, Floor. The 3 and 4 days off a week is a plus! The 12 hours in the jail is a long day indeed but worth it. Take the good with the bad. Some agencies does the same but your at one of those stations for months, instead of a few hours.

Hmmm, I'm rambling. It's a good start for new deputies, they get to see what they leave us after arrest and the patrol guys don't seem to think they are way better than us too!
