  • Roundabouts?

Do you guys have lots of roundabouts where you live?

They have been putting more and more in around here. I never liked them. Then not to far from my house they put in a two lane one. It's horrible! I just found out today they have 28 more multi-lane ones planned for the next few years and even more single lane ones. Seems to me the old fashioned stop lights work better.

I don't travel much and was wondering if everywhere was as messed up as here.

    Re: Roundabouts?

    I love/hate roundabouts.

I love them personally. Much better than stop signs/lights, but hate how so many people don't know HOW to use them. So many people don't yield, they don't follow the signs, etc...

So I just wish more people just knew how to use them and we would be alright!

Agreed! They are faster if all the people there know how to used them correctly. Doesn't seem like many people around here do. I guess it's new but it's not that hard to learn. I can't count the near misses I've had in the last 6 months.

We call those jughandles in NJ. Don't like em. Have to turn left to go right!

First time I ever saw them in regular use was in 1992 when I was in Melbourne, Australia. Hated them then, hate them now.

If they were meant to slow people down on residential streets, they didn't work well because the locals simply learned to navigate them at outrageous speeds.

I like them only when they are wet and no one is on them. Other than that I dont mind them but they are kinda annoying.

Roundabouts are great for improved traffic flow. Seems bizarre that Green Bay, WI is so against them. So much better than four way stops and traffic lights where you can turn right on red anyway.

Down in Clearwater, they have a few. Actually hinders traffic. Every year when the spring break madness starts they have articles about them. The consensus is the residents hate them, city officials love them.

We have a couple here, including a two lane one. I agree with what's been stated, they should work great, but people just have too hard of a time with them. I was in England a couple years ago and saw how efficient they should be, and they work great over there!

I never minded them, they're really not hard to navigate once you get the hang of it. They're common in Mexico (I visit Tijuana on a regular basis) where they're called gloriettas.

Of course, I think everyone who's never used one probably has an impression of them from "European Vacation" with Chevy Chase where the Griswold family got trapped in a London roundabout for an entire day because Clark Griswold (Chase) couldn't figure out how to exit the inner ring!

i love them. here in Carmel i believe we have the most roundabouts in the country and they just make traffic go so much more smoothly. when they first go in you have people not understanding them but after a few months its usullly okay. from what i have read accidents with roundabouts are actually less then with stopsigns and lights.

they are popping up all around here too. So far they have been good traps for drunk drivers who seem to forget to turn the wheels and end up going straight into the center!

There are more and more being built in my area. There are a couple in my neighborhood, and I like them and can see how they can be much more efficient if used properly. In fact I can see one of them from my computer room window and its very entertaining watching people get confused. The real problem with the on in my area are the drivers going the wrong direction trying to get home just a little faster and have near misses, depending on the turn you might have to circle nearly all the way around it but not those in a hurry!
