  • 2007 or newer Silverado or Avalnche, oil question

I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado and I was wondering if anyone has a 2007 Chevy Truck( Silverado, Avalanche, Tahoe) that has the DIC( Driver Information Center) that allows you to view engine oil life, tire pressure etc.

Well, the reason I ask is because i went to get an oil change today at my dealership and they told me instead of waiting 3,000 miles, that i should wait 8,000 miles. I got it changed anyway but i was just wondering any of you guys do who own a chevy truck. There pretty much the same on all Silverados Tahoes, and Avalanches because they all put Vortec engines in them and a lot of newer Chevy vechiles have this system. I know for sure the Avalanches have the DIC system which consists of a row of buttons. Anyways thanks for your help

I dont own a bowtie but on my 5.7 HEMI I change the oil every 3000 miles with 5-20 Royal Purple. I think of it this way oil changes are cheaper than engine replacement.

Could you have synthetic oil. When I had my CTS they told me to go 7500 miles between oil changes. Just typing out loud.

My 2004 Silverado SS had a DIC. I used Mobil 1 and changed it every 5,000 miles. I don't remember what the DIC would show for oil life.

If your concerned about it you could have an oil analysis done. A good place for this is Blackstone Laboratories.

            Exactamondo!

My '00 Yukon with the glaring "change oil" light gets changed every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 and Wix/Napa Gold filters. Blackstone will say your wasting money, even I'm wasting money at 5,000 miles, they say I can go 7,500 between oil changes.

I change at 5,000 miles cause it's easy to remember, I change at 130,000 miles and now I'm approaching 135,000 miles and time to think about changing.....

2,800 is good, but little overkill unless your driving habits abuses the motor.

Prior to using synthetic, I changed every 3,000 miles.

The Neon gets the same treatment, every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1/Wix/Napa Gold filters.

And....remember there are componets behind/besides the motor that needs TLC.

I change my tranny fluid once a year (drop pan and new filter) and still on original tranny with almost 135,000 miles on the clock.

I would send a sample to Blackstone Labs

Check out Bob is the oil guy forum, it's great site for oils/grease etc.

            Have fun

I go by the DIC and when it tells me to change the oil... here is what I figure is if it didn't work Chevy wouldn't keep installing them in their vehicles and telling the customers to use them. They have been in their vehicles for some time now they are suppose to calculate oil 'wear' based on driving conditions and as far as I can tell they
              (DIC) does work.

Also some time ago Chevy (I thought others did as well) officially changed their oil change intervals I thought it was 7500 miles not 8000.

Re: 2007 or newer Silverado or Avalnche, oil question

My 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 usually gets changed with the light comes on. I noticed when towing the boat constantly in the summer on boating trips all over northern Michigan it will remind me to change it more often then taking road trips down state unloaded. That feature has been around for a while now on Chevy.

My company truck is a 2006 Ford F350 6.0L PSD, that gets changed every 5000 miles since its used for towing cars, trucks, campers, or anything else that can get repossessed and that truck has 206,575 miles on it. Still runs strong. Just replaced the head gaskets and used ARP head studs and replaced 2 injectors.

Take note the longer oil change is for 07 and newer GM vehicles as stated by GM.

FWIW... my father has an 07 Tahoe and my girlfriend has an 07 HHR both go by the DIC.

Re: 2007 or newer Silverado or Avalnche, oil question

Here is a quote... from cars.com

Why are oil change intervals getting longer?
Why are car companies claiming longer intervals between recommended oil changes? I always assumed 2,000 – 3,000 miles.

Scott J, Chicago We’ve been beaten over the head with the three-month, 3,000-mile oil-change interval for years, but that’s not necessarily the case on newer cars and trucks. Manufacturers cite oil-life monitors and modern oil and engine technology as reasons to extend services up to 7,500 miles on standard oil.

An oil-life monitor looks at mileage, speed and idling time to calculate when you should change the oil. A General Motors representative recommends relying on an oil-life monitor rather than a set mileage (like 3,000 miles) on GM cars equipped with one in order to prevent unnecessary oil changes.

If the monitor senses you’re allowing the engine oil to warm up, and you take it easy until it’s at operating temperature, an interval of 5,000 or 7,500 miles is not uncommon. If you start your car cold and immediately tear onto the highway at 80 mph, however, expect your next service date to arrive sooner and include more than an oil change if you continue to thrash on a cold engine.

Some cars have an information display on the center dashboard that will count down oil life from a percentage, while others may have the information display combined with other controls on the dashboard. Navigation-equipped cars usually have oil-change-interval information accessible through the screen’s menu options. It’s going to be different on every car, and occasionally hard — as well as annoying — to reset the “Change Oil Now” light when it starts flickering in your face.

Higher-end cars like BMWs, Porches and Mercedes-Benzes can recommend oil-change intervals from 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Yikes! When you see these extreme intervals, it’s usually because the cars recommend synthetic oil, which in the right conditions doesn’t break down as easily as traditional, dinosaur-based oil. On any car, especially high-end ones, always follow the manufacturer recommendations for maintenance services like oil changes.

My PT Turbo came from the factory with conventional oil but since the turbo is oil cooled, and I've got the Stage 1 upgrade and I drive it pretty hard, I swapped to Mobil 1 with just 500 miles on the odo and change it every 3,000 miles like clockwork. Turbochargers get really hot and I'm not taking any chances on the oil used to cool it.

My Crossfire (which is really just a reskinned Mercedes Benz SLK) came from the factory with 8 quarts of Mobil 1 in the belly of its 3.2L V6. The FSS (Flexible Service Schedule) will adjust the oil change interval based on time, driving style, etc but basically it calls for 7,000 mile change intervals. I'm sticking to what Mercedes recommends with this car.

A friend of mine had a C-Class Benz with the same system, but it initially called for 10,000 mile change intervals. The warning light came on with less than 8,000 on the odo but it turned out that was because a full year had gone by and apparently that time period over rode the mileage milestone.

I used to change the oil in my Miata once a year, but I only drove the car about 2500 miles annually. Just didn't want the oil sitting there that long.

                          Tuck,

Do what you want man , more changes can't hurt anything and I change mine at 5,000 miles as it's easy to remember and my light comes on shortly after changing anyways, so I'm not far off.

Like I said, I drop the pan on my tranny once a year and run about 6-8qts of new fluid in it, at 100,000 miles I did a full flush of, Antifreeze, brake fluid, new plugs-wires and she runs like a champ with almost 135,000 miles of pretty much trouble free miles. I did rear brakes last year and the fronts have a lot of life in it. I only replaced the Secondary A.I.R. injection valve(40 bucks) and a busted window regulator in rear passenger door (cables got all jumbled up, new one on Ebay for 25.00 bucks), other than a possible HVAC door going out, all is good. The regulator went out from kids holding the window as the other was rolling it up causing the cables to tangle (cables? what happen to metal scissor type?????)

                          Have fun.

                          Nice truck too!
