    Re: ShamWOW

If you notice the guys always selling this type of product demonstrate it on a vinyl/leather covered table (even at car shows)
From experience, I can tell you that they do this because this is the only material that will make the product actually absorb water. On paint, you might as well be using a piece of cardboard because it has the inate ability to pass over water and not absorb a drop! Try it on a soft tonneau or rag top and it'll pick up water like a hoover vacuum but that's about it.
I bought one years ago and used it for about a week before I threw it out - the other problem is it dries stiff as a board.

This is a great observation. I'll have to remember this next time I see a demo in the mall kiosks. Agree they do dry incredibly stiff, although they are decent for blotting up water from carpet (no Little Green extractor though)

The coke spilling into the carpet square is badly rigged.
There is a spill on a clip than the next its gone when he is ready to use the towel.

Back when I was a newbie detailer I purchased

Permaseal:The Lazy Man's Wax which is about filling in scratches, that came with some chamois. "Made in Germany" I hated them personally, they felt very cottony like or something never used them again.....

Since the Shamwow's can be cut and used as rugs and such. They are probably similar to these. You can't really cut a microfiber cloth down the middle like the commercial shows.

I would like to see someone buy them and review them.
Wow! I remember Permaseal. I bought some of that stuff back in the early 90s at a car show in NYC. Weird stufff. It was a powder that you needed to apply with a moist applicator. The demo guy used to buff out old copper pennies to sell it.

I must say, nice throw into the sink

This might actually be worth something though.

                    Re: ShamWOW

Bought a "SuperShammy" at the mall a few months ago. The demo was exactly the same as Fritz's "ShamWOW" infomercial, and works just the same. Was interesting to note that their test surface was a black, textured laminate surface (i.e. Formica). I believe their choice of surface for the demos is deliberate.

It DOES work, but will still leave small, fine droplets on smooth surfaces. The Absorber does this as well, but the material at least FEELS much softer. When drying my vehicle, I usually do a few quick swipes with the Absorber, and follow up with a WaffleWeave. BTW... I've been using the same Absorber since 1996.

The SuperShammy "fabric" feels a little too coarse for fine automotive finishes, but maybe it's just perception. I have used it in the bathroom to wipe down tile after a shower. It gets most of the water, but not all. Haven't had the nerve to try it on one of the vehicles yet... maybe once I get the Baja painted.

My review... it's fine for kitchens & bathrooms... and also for vehicles as well (trailers, RV's, boats, toys, etc.) but have yet to test it on a well-maintained, highly polished automotive painted surface.

C'mon Mike... surely the Meguiar's R&D lab can put this stuff to the test! ... or maybe an "Open Garage" experiment once the time changes...

                      Re: ShamWOW

From my experiences, I'd recommend using them for absorbing spills from carpet. They do work that way. (They need to be wet and wrung out to be effective.) I haven't tested their capacities, though. I wouldn't endorse them for drying a car, especially not streak-free. However, for someone that doesn't take care of their car to the extreme, these may be good enough for them.

From a more "technical" aspect, they are "airspun," not woven. Typically they have either "100% rayon" or "viscose"/"viskose" written on them. Most seem to be made in Germany, but some (like the Zorbees that Billy pushes) are made in China. Other countries of origin that I've seen are Israel and Holland.
Some are thinner than others. I think I read the 2 common types are 140g and 240g weights.

From what I've been able to tell, the ones in the dollar stores that are made in Germany are very similar, if not identical, to the ones sold on the infomercials, so if you were wanting to try one, maybe look at the local dollar store first. (Even though you need to beware of cheap immitators! )
