GPS Navigation

I am looking to purchase a portable GPS Navigation system for my car. What units do any of you have and how do you like them? I am looking at Garmin, Magellan & TomTom. Right now I have Onstar Turn-by-Turn navigation, but it expires at the end of Dec., & I can not justify $299/year to renew it. The TomTom One XL-S is the one I am leaning toward right now, but I am open to suggestions.

I have a Magellan, it is nice I think it was 150 on sale and maybe a rebate. But you should check those websites that have really good deals. Off the top of my head I can not think of them but I hope someone else knows them. I would recommend a TOMTOM, the have lots of great features and you can even change the voice to actors. Make sure you get text to speech on the GPS.

We have a slew of Garmin's in our house...our newest edition is the Garmin nuvi 770. We got it for $599 plus a $50 mail in rebate, I think from Costco.

We love our Garmins and wouldn't go anywhere without them. The feature set on all Garmin's is great and you can find one that will meet your needs very easily.

I'm getting my mom a Garmin Nuvi 750 for XMAS. What really pulled me into the Garmin is their multi-point destinations. For example, you can enter multiple addresses and go from place to place. Great if you run multiple places while out and about. The 750 is around $225 on many websites.

Also, you can update the Garmin maps once for free....after that you have to pay for them. At that point, you might as well just get another GPS. These should last you for a few years.

I have had 4 garmins, currently have two and a TomTom. I prefer the TomTom because:

-menus are more intuative and its easier to find places (though this is easy to try for yourself at the store to see which you prefer)
-ALL TomToms allow route planning on the PC. They have a built in route planner or you can use "Tyre" a free app that uses google maps to plot out a route.
-ALL TomToms can record a track log using a free downloadable app

To get the route planning on the PC and track log you have to buy a very expensive Garmin model while a $99 TomTom one will do it. And when it comes down to it, the $99 models will get you to your destination just as well as the most expensive model providing the maps are good for your area. The Garmins have better maps in some areas but it seems like my home area, TomTom wins slightly. Also some of the more pricey units have more detailed map info such as time restricted roads, if you have those in your area, it might be wise to invest in one that does, otherwise the GPS assumes the route is always closed.

I really like having a nice cheap unit that is easily replaced if damaged/lost/stolen or I need new updates, I can just buy new in a year or two.

Just recently picked up a Tom Tom 330 XL after much research and so far I really like it. Very easy to program, easy to read, plenty of volume, etc. I got it at Best Buy for under $200.

We have a very early Garmin GPS unit. It's about the size of a brick...

We were out in Washington a few years ago and it told us to drive 11, 268 miles and then make a u-turn. No joke!

Fortunately, we bought a newer Garmin last year. The difference in technology is incredible.

I've been checking GPS units and found a magellen 1412 portable GPS with text to talk, and 4.3" screen. $149.00 thanksgiving special normal price $399 according to shopko. lots of features and extras. I'm getting one tomorrow!!!

i would like to get a tom tom but but for the price magellan had more opitons for the price.

If you just want portable GPS for just GPS function ie show direction to go from point A to point B then any cheap GPS is fine. If you want one with gadget that can play mp3, show pictures and slide show, bluetooth, possible video, voice recognition, additional free software, customize menu like different voices, different color screen, and custom poi and stuffs, then TomTom 940 is the one.
