One thing about manufacturing, well at least the automotive part of it, is that there are not any type of photographic devices allowed inside the actual manufacturing area of the building. That trade secrets thing that is guarded so passionately. So we may never see the actual inside of the manufacturing facility. It would be neat to see though. I guess we can always hope.

So what happens when places like Hershey's, Dole, and Entenmann's decide to have TLC or whoever film their factory and give tours? They just realize that they already own the market and don't care anymore?

It has been awhile since I've seen one of the TLC shows but I don't recall seeing much other than standard typical and what I would call industry wide processes. What you do not see, to my knowledge, is any process or formulas that they would consider a proprietary process or a "secret" formula. Similar to how KFC or Coke have guarded those secret herbs and spices or the actual recipe for Coca-Cola for as long as they have.

From the automotive side I am unaware of any facility, domestic or foreign owned, that will allow a camera in any area where the actual building of something is taking place. If on the rare occassion that they do allow somone in that someone is specifically instructed on what can be filmed or have pictures taken and as has been my experience there isn't a lot of "real" production taking place.

Again I speak from the automotive side of manufacturing and can not speak intelligently about other manufacturing. Hope that helps explain a bit what I was trying to say in my earlier post.

There have been plenty of TV shows documenting the manufacture and assembly of automobiles, including several inside the Ferrari factory. In fact, Ultimate Factories on TLC has shown that, the Corvette factory in Bowling Green and others. General assembly is shown, but there's nothing proprietary about a body shell coming down a conveyor to meet up with the engine and other major assemblies.

As for any facility where Meguiar's products are made, basically all you'd see is a bunch of ingredients being dumped into large mixers. Not too different, really, from a commercial ink blending plant, or even some of the things shown on How It's Made when you see huge vats of peanut butter, cookie dough, etc being blended. The basic process is essentially the same. What you would NEVER see, however, is the list of actual ingredients and their proportions in the "recipe". That, of course, is proprietary information and there aren't even that many people within the Meguiar's organization who know exactly what's in what. Still, that doesn't stop people from calling and asking things like "I need to know exactly what is in ___________" or "can I get a full ingredient listing for ____________?".
