  • Anybody knows San Diego area? Help needed

My friend from East Coast is thinking of taking vacation with his family (wife and kids) to San Diego.

He would love to take the kids to the San Diego zoo.

He needs help with where is a good area to stay. Are there any little
"resort" areas (not fancy/posh, but just quaint coastal towns, etc.)
that you can think of? Usually they look for areas where they can take
kids on bike rides, etc and not worry too much about cars/street
lights, etc. They like to listen waves on vacation and not traffic, BUT
also don't have a ton to spend.

    Your help will be appreciated

      Hey Zoran,

Well where to start. Couple questions and we'll go from there.

How long are they staying out here?
      Age of the kids?
      Resort or just Hotel?

Really, there are so many places in San Diego that no matter who you are you wont be disappointed, but there are some areas that would be better for the kids and biking.

I don't know exactly but approximately a week.

I don't know exactly but I would guess average 5.

If I understand him correctly he is not looking for hotel, nor resort resort, but quiet inexpensive area that is better for kids and biking (that is the emphasis of description).

Well, there are so many possibilities, but the best area that has the biggest variety of hotels is La Jolla. All the beaches are around there, plenty of child activities. There are some really expensive hotels there and some very well priced hotels there.

Couple of suggestions if they have a week and are around 5 years old.

          Like you said, the Zoo.
Legoland (very close to La Jolla)
          Sea World
          Wild Animal Park

Each of those are day events, and you can easily spend a day or two in La Jolla its self, biking and going to the beach.

Let me know if you need any more help. I didn't provide a list of hotels because there are so many, each special and different in its own way that it would probably be less useful than helpful.

I do not know the name of it, but there is a hotel/resort in La Jolla Shores right on the boardwalk/beach. U can eat dinner lookin at the ocean then hop on the bike and ride down the beach or up to the cove and enjoy the richy rich people in their Bentleys and Rolls Royces in the evenings.

Hotel del Coronado is a nice choice but may be a little expensive. Its right on Coronado, on the beach, Coronado doesnt have that many cars as it is. The zoo is just a hop across the bay on the bridge

I will pass your suggestions to him but in the meantime do you know of anything that sounds more modest yet almost equally, if not equally, well quiet / positioned?

Tell him to check out the timeshares and resorts in Oceanside. We have the longest and best beaches in So. Cal and they can ride and rent bikes on the strand. Way cheaper than Coranado and Mission Bay area.

                    O'Side!

Plus you get to meet all of our well...interesting locals lol! Always something intersting happening on the coast in Oceanside! Fantastic beaches, great food, lots of little stores. Carlsbad and Del Mar are also VERY nice places to visit. If I wanted to spend a day in a town on the beach, it would be Del Mar, no doubt. You also have the horse races and stuff there as well. Carlsbad just has very nice resorts and hotels with a beautiful beach with awesome cliffs. Oceanside has a lot of sandy beaches which the kids will love with always some beach event going on.

Also, BIG warning, but the beach right where the San Onofre Nuclear power plant (the big boobs) is a 'clothing optional' beach. I'm not sure if it is just south or north of the plant, but just be warned lol!

                    Ironic huh?

Having been born, raised and settled in San Diego, I know this place like the palm of my hand. I also spent many years in the Hospitality Industry here and can help them out. Feel free to PM me for additional information. Moving away from La Jolla (which is beautiful but overpriced), I suggest the Bahia Hotel/Resort in Mission Bay, The Dana Inn in Mission Bay, the Catamaran Hotel, the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay and the San Diego Hilton Mission Bay. All of these are right on the bay, just miles from the Airport and around the corner from Sea World. The zoo is only 15 minutes away and Legoland is about 45 min (max) north. There are also several others that are less expensive that I can recommend, but they will not offer what the ones above do, which is the water. My first recommendation would be the Bahia. Again feel free to PM me, I can give them all sorts of info.
