  • Thinking about replacing my wife's car next spring...

....but probably not with one of these. We got this in the mail yesterday:

What a great deal though, huh? You can't read the fine print in this image but it says:

Payment based on $50,000 down. Including Sales Tax Rate of 7.75%. License Fee of $1630 and Doc Fee of $55. Monthly payment is for 35 months at $2,398 with a final balloon payment of $164,000. No mileage restriction. On approved Tier 1A credit with an interest rate of 6.34% APR subject to lender approval. Other financing options available. Offer valid on new 2008 Gallardo Spyder Demo in stock.

The no mileage restriction makes it tempting, but what kills it for me is the offer is only on a Demo car. My wife doesn't want a demo car.

Well, to be honest, that's not the ONLY thing killing it for me.

Tell me about it. I worked in Direct Mail Marketing for many, many years before coming to Meguiar's so I know very well how this stuff works. That piece should never have found its way into my mail box.

I can't imagine how much money someone is making to have one of these plus who knows what other cars plus a nice house in a very ritzy neighborhood and still be able to take vacations & dress the part oh & eat out. That is just insane.

Hmmmm....the gig at Meguairs must pay pretty good. I knew I'd spent a lot on products recently but I didn't think it was that bad.

A friend of mine has quite the life and cars. He's my age, 17, and so far has had a 04 BMW M3, 07 Jeep Wrangler with a Hemi and almost every modification ever thought of done to it, a 08 F-250 TurboDesiel with the full banks kit, 8in Fabtech Lift and couple other custom modifications and a 08 Jeep SRT-8 that can snap a 1/2 in about 10 flat and the front wheels lift off the ground. His latest car is a 08 BMW M3, every option plus a 7k F1 Exhaust. His dad had a 07 Porsche Turbo but he traded that for a 08 Ferrari F430. His mom drives a 07 S550.

Just hope I get that job someday.

Re: Thinking about replacing my wife's car next spring...

OK, I've researched this a bit more.

A brand spanking new Gallardo Spyder has an MSRP of $228,260. Add tax, license and doc fees and you get to $247,630 out the door. The deal in this ad ultimately takes $297,930 out of your pocket. For a demo model.

Keep in mind you're only making payments for just under 3 years, everything else is cash. So you're basically paying $50,000 in interest during those 3 years. For a demo model.

It just doesn't make financial sense to go this route. So we've decided to save up and just pay cash for a new one. Meaning my wife will get this as a gift for her 200th birthday. Yeah, we should be able to save up for one by then.

                            If we sell the dog.

And if we don't eat much.

And, well, if we live that long.

                            Maybe.

Sounds like a plan. How did you get the wife to agree to that? What is your secret.
