  • I am looking at getting a new job open to job suggestions.

I am currently working at a car wash for a year and I need a job that is more flexible and that does not depend on the weather. because if it rains I do not work and make no money. I was thinking about working for a car dealer as a salesman once I am 18. I would like to stay around cars. I am open to suggestions on a new job.

Sales at a car dealership can be very rewarding, but it is cyclical (many car dealerships are hurting right now) , however, I would actually suggest either working in the parts/service department of a dealership. The service end is usually very busy (and stable) and you can work your way up the ladder in pretty quick order. Many dealerships usually pay a service writer a base salary plus a bonus (either monthly, bi- monthly, etc) that can really add up. ( plus you really get to see the service end and learn how a service job is calculated ) I work with my Father-in-law part time as a locksmith servicing many dealerships and the service writers tend to stay a long time whereas the salesman tend to bounce between dealership to dealership. Hope this helps and best of luck on your search.

Thanks for your advice. I know salesman have to be good at selling a car because they make a commission and that is what I am worried about if you do not sell a car for a while you are not makeing much. after you wrote about the service department I interested in that I am going to call my local Ford dealer and Nissan dealer to see how I have to be to work in the service department.
      Thanks for the info.

The money is in the dealer's used car department. You need patience, diplomacy, perseverance and the ability to close*.
BTW, in 2006, it was a $325+ billion dollar business, wholesale/retail. And, every car is a used car.

If you wanna go work in the service dept there are schools that will place you once your done. BMW has a step program, my last dealer had 15 techs from step when I was there 2 years ago.
I would figure out what you like and find something based on that. Go to college and get an education. I started in the auto business at 17 back in 1998, I worked for Pep Boys at the parts counter, then went to Chevy back to Pep Boys at 19 ended up working for BMW parts dept. I have worked for BWM ever since, 4 dealers in 4 states since 2000.

Are you close to any car auctions ? The ones in my area seem to be looking for drivers part time to run cars to and from auctions. You get to drive a lot of different vehicles and it's pretty flexible.

Hadn't thought of that, Shyneman. Driving would be pretty much a dead-end minimum wage job, but at 18 years old it would be a window into the used car industry. An auction will cover just about every facet of the business except retail.

The Manheim group of auctions is nationwide:

Apply as a detailer at a car dealership(work rain or shine), then decide where you'd like to be within the dealership and work your way up the ladder. You already have detailing experience, so you'll get your foot in the door. Then just watch people, and see where you want to be.

Thanks for the advice guys. Driving cars to and from auctions sounds easy. I would like to do that. But sounds good to get a job at the dealer as a detailer. They all sound like good jobs. I am going out tommorow because PG&E are shutting our power off for the day to do some work on some power lines. I will go to a couple of dealers and get some applications. Thanks for the advice guys. I like all the ideas you guys said.

My dad is a car dealer, and honestly, a good and reputable auto detailer is much needed!

The guy he has doing his cars does a HORRIBLE job, basically wets it up and wipes it down, nothing more. I would do it for him, but he has had me working at our other lot.

Seriously though, have competitive prices and do good work, and your business will flourish by word of mouth. That is how him and his friends work.

I would recommend going buy different dealerships and just selling your services...

So I went to a couple of dealers. Ford and Nissan. The ford dealer was in no need of new employees. But the Nissan dealer was interested. I talked to the parts and service manager. Reason why I was not hired was that I am not 18. It ***** I could have probably got the job because he said they were kinda looking for a lot boy. I am going to go back and talk to him again in a month.
