  • Garage organization ...

A little off topic, but I figured who would know better than car enthusiasts:
I'm looking for cabinet systems in my newly finished garage. See a lot of stuff out there from particle board to metal etc. Lokking for some sturdy stuff that's not too expensive. Anyone have any good cabinetry ??

    Thanks

You might check out something like craigslist for old storage cabinets or shelving or kitchen cabinets. A good place to find used kitchen cabinets is at a home where new ones are being installed and they want to rid themselves of the old ones. Local auctions also are a good source of HD shelving.

I have a old cabinet just sitting on the floor in my garage. I have a nice workforce stand up cabinet that is full. I was trying to find an old article in family handyman, they made a nice rolling detail cart.

I saw that Sears sells a selection of cabinetry, such as Gladiator, Suncast, and Snap-On, but those cabinets are not cheap, around $300-$400 for a tall 2 door cabinet, some with wheels. I'm considering buying a Gladiator for $370, but that is a good chunk of cash and I'm not sure how sturdy they are (not on display at the store). Anyone buy any brand-name cabinets and can comment on quality?

          Thanks

Not sure how fancy you want. You could try putting an add in your local paper or craigslist looking for kitchen cabinets. You could probably get them for near free if someone was remodeling their kitchen.

The ones that came with my house have kitchen cabinet doors on a home made OSB frame. I painted them up and they work great. I even painted the insides white so it was a little brighter in there.

I use shelves from Home Depot. They are the snap together steel type. They actually are very sturdy once they are together.

Short of getting them from a kitchen remodel or if your area has a Habitat resell store, both of which should would be fairly cheap, you could always make something yourself. I've done a couple of work benches for about $40 total material and if you cut everything straight they are pretty simple to do. 2X4's and some plywood allows you to customize the shelving to your specific needs. There are tons of examples via Google or DIYnetwork. A couple hours and you have unpainted shelving.

An example of just such a shelf. I used one sheet of 1/2 OSB approx $8 and several 2x4's about $2.50 each.

Each shelf is 16" deep. It worked out good, I just cut a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" OSB into 6 equal sections. The outside width of the shelf is 4'. The height is 8' since my ceiling height in my garage is 10' it worked out fine. I just divided the spacing of the shelves about equal. The exception is where the spray bottles are, that one got higher. The shelf below got a little shorter but the Mirror Glaze bottles fit perfect. Just sort of figure out what you want to put on it and make your shelf spacing whatever works best. I bought a bunch of rubber maid containers for it but they are about an inch too big. So I might be adjusting the shelves. All my products are a mess right now. That was a posed picture.
