  • 4 new tires or only get 2?

Hey guys. I'm taking my car in for an oil change and tire rotation on Friday, however the other day while washing it I found a small bubble in the driver's side front tire (which also has had a SLOW leak for a little while).

Now here where I'm undecided. It is a leased car (2007 Audi A4) but I treat it like it's my own. My philosophy on all my previous cars was I might as well get 4 new tires. However, in this case, my lease is up in May 2009 so between now and then I'll put on a MAXIMUM 9K miles.

The tires i'm looking at are 138/tire on the internet (Eagle F1 All season). I want good tires because I like to "drive" the car.

So what do you guys think? Should I get 4 new F1's or just 2 new OEM (Conti ProContact) and just deal with it until I turn the car in? Thanks!!

Can't you just get it patched?

If not, I say just buy the one OEM tire.

No i can't. There's a bubble in the sidewall, which basically means the tire is done and I'll need a new one. Getting one is not an option because i'm not going to have 1 side with a brand new tire and the other side with tires that have 15k on them

Just put your spare wheel and tire on from the trunk if you are concerned about money. It should be a full sized spare. However, thaat can mis-align your car since the tread is different.
Otherwise, if you have a quattro, just get all new tires.

Get the 2 tires, Clean the other 2 really good, apply a nice dressing and they'll look good. Then just enjoy the car. No reason to buy all 4 tires for a vehicle that you're just going to walk away from in 9k miles. If you were going to be selling it to an individual, then my answer would be different, but you're just walking away from a lease vehicle.

I would also go with 2 tires. If you go with 1 ride quality and handling may suffer due to differences in tread depth.

            Just my 2 cents.

Is the spare a full size? If so put that one on the car say left front, put that old rim and tire as the spare and the new tire to replace the bubble tire on the right front and the older 2 tires in the rear of the car. As long as you do not do burnouts the rear tires will be fine.

I agree with getting 2 new tires if you are turning in the vehicle at the end of the lease. I know from owning 2 subarus it was even stated in the owner manual due to the all wheel drive replacing ownly one tire could give the computers that help controll the all vehicle drive and the VDC some fits due to the difference in tire size even though it would be a small difference it still could happen. This inturn would through an "idiot" light on. Don't ask how I know lol.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I went ahead and just ordered the 2 tires. When I take the car in friday, they'll put the 2 new ones on the front. Hopefully no more problems until i turn this car in. Thanks again!!

I've leased cars for decades and you first need to check your lease agreement. Many lease agreements stipulate that at turn-in there must be 4 matching tires (of reasonably equal wear). That said, if the two older tires are still reasonably good it probably won't be an issue, and even if it is you can pay up then.

If one tire has a bubble in the sidewall I'd be uneasy driving around with its siblings for any length of time.

Anyone who watched the Brick Yard 400 last weekend will appreciate my final recommendation: Two tires, right side only.

If it was my car and I owned it then I would get four matching tires same brand/model tread.

I would go with 2 tires, matching the ones you have on there already.

I understand what you're saying but that's the thing, it's NOT my car. It's leased and I'm giving it back. No intention to buy it out what so ever.

The rear tires are still in good shape. I checked the treads yesterday. I figured I'd put the 2 new ones on the front (which seam to wear faster) so by the time I'm ready to turn the car in, the treads should be relatively the same.

Just 2 matching brand tires so you don't get penalized when you turn in the car.
