  • nascar?

I know I have posted about nascar before in the past and said how I feel its going downhill from its hay day but I think this weekend at the brickyard kinda pushed the limit for me. I know there was extreme tire wear through out the race because of goodyears miscalculation in the differences in the news cars from those of last year but come on honestly? COMPETITION CAUTIONS!!!!???? What is the deal with this now, I know Nascar is trying to allow crew chiefs an opportunity to check tires but they never would have done that in the past, they even did it at bristol earlier this year. It seems like Nascar is mandating so much now where everyone has to be equal. Same engines and bodies. The only difference between the cars is the front facia besides that theya re all identical. I just feel like its another ploy to bunch up the pack to make it seem like there more competition in the field when really theres not. This past weekend was such a boring race and so has been many races this season it seems too much of a common trend for me anymore. How much longer is Nascar going to diminish the traditions of the old Nascar? Im sure some of you may disagree with me completely but what do you guys think? What has happened to NASCAR????? Im just tired of the same people winning week in and week out, I think I might switch to watching F1 racing now. I say we go back to old times and race the new camaros and challengers and let the car companies make the engines.

    Re: nascar and socialism?

I don't follow Nascar much, but it sounds like they're using the NFL model....parity at all costs=boring

i don't follow it much either but my brother does and his bone from this past race came down to the tires. Why is it that they only run BF Goodyear tires on all the cars. You have several tire companies that make racing tires. He would probably say you are right because everything has to be equal with out saying it has too be. I believe what they think is that you bring it down to drive against driver. If that's the case then really NASCAR could make all the cars and just hand each one out at the race. That's pretty much whats' going on. Anyway, that's my two cents of what my brother's 4 cents would probably consist of.

          Re: nascar?

While Nascar remains very popular and many of my friends and family members enjoy Nascar, I tend to follow ALMS, IRL,SCCA and F1. I think the problem stems from the fact that it is the driver and not the manufacturer's focus anymore. While the COT provided parity, I feel some of the identity of the Nacsar's history is being stripped. I really find ALMS compelling racing , IRL on the upswing, and F1 for the advanced technological aspects.(although they treat the USA as stepchildren, IMO)

Yes, NASCAR has changed. In my opinion........way too much. I don't watch it anymore. I don't even check to see who is leading in points. It would be nice to go back to the good ol days of racing, but there is a good chance that will never happen.

Everything has to be even now a days. Parody is everywhere. In all facets of life. This latest fiasco with NASCAR has my casual interest in the sport ending. From them changing the rules on the fly to everybody equal it is not a sport anymore. That is just my opinion.

as far as i am concerned, nascar's dead, there's not anyone I want to root for, the cars ****, the tires ****, it's the same thing nearly every race, it was better back when it started, now there's little innovation, no active competition btwn crews, because you can't do anything

                  Re: nascar?

I’m a fan of all types of auto racing(all types of motorcycle racing too). I remember watching Nascar as a child in the early 70’s and loved the fact that I could go play outside for an hour, come back in to watch a little more of the race, and repeat the whole sequence 5 more times.

Plain and simple: Nascar races are just TOO LONG. It’s amazing that the drivers can endure that much time in the cockpits! It’s great for Nascar too (Commercial $$$). I “tivo” all races and most times can get through a whole race in about an hours time. The first 400 miles are spent “cruising” around the track. The real race starts after the “money pit stop”.

I started watching Nascar again, around 1994(The Gordon/Earnhardt years). The one thing that ALWAYS bothered me in Nascar was/is the “bump & Run” stuff, aggressive drivers always did/do. GRRRRR Most other types of racing will not put up with that type of dirty racing. Nascar has gotten a little better with dinging dirty drivers. They still have a long ways to go with keeping a even hand with other drivers.

COT: Great for the safety of the drivers!!! It has made for some better races at race tracks that have multiple grooves to race in. I would hope it does even out the field a little, so a small underfunded team could come in and race, but “who are we kidding”. The rich owners will just spend more $$$ on R&D, to be able to out perform the poor owners. I know, “Life’s not fair”.

The Indy race: UGLY! I do think, Nascar did save a lot of accidents from happening, because of the tire issues! Nascar is to blame for the tire, because it didn’t have a test date for the Indy track. Nascar was trying to keep test dates to a minimum, to save teams $$$. A kind of “damn’ed if you do and damn’ed if you don’t”, kind of situation.

Bottom line: Watch the Craftsman Truck series, for better “Nascar” type racing.

                    Re: nascar?

I was at Indianapolis last weekend, it was my first live Nascar race. We were kept in the dark about the tires problem for quite a while, but my friend got the information from his father who was watching the race on TV while talking to him on his cell phone.

We did notice the unusually high number of caution laps and pitstops.

It still was very enjoyable, especially since it's the first time I saw it live.

If you don't like seeing the same people winning week after week, don't bother watching F1.

                      Re: nascar?

Nascar is going down hill I follow it closely. At least Kyle Busch did not not win I was happy Jimmy won. The problem with the tires is that good year is saying that a heavier car and a differnt overall shape and they said it chages the way tires wear which is true. they should have known already that they should have made a harder tire because of the difference in the new COT. My main point they should have been more prepared instead of making excuses for their bad tire. Goodyear and Nascar need to get there act together or they will lose fans to the sport.

wow I didn't think this many people would agree with me, I see there is a lot of hostility out there about NASCAR, at least I'm not the only one ahaha, I actually went online to see what ticket prices were and it ranged between $80-$90, thats so much more than my dad used to pay back in the mid 90's at Richmond International, even Indianapolis didn't look sold out, even in the grand stands.

                          Re: nascar?

Goodyear (not BF Goodyear, that's BF Goodrich) was indeed the "highest bidder". They pay a huge sponsorship to NASCAR for that exclusivity. I'm not saying it's good, just that it was done that way.

The engines are NOT all the same. Recently, NASCAR made the Toyotas reduce their horse power by 15 hp, even though they were not in violation of any rules.

I think NASCAR's only other, and perhaps better option would have been to cancel/postpone the race. Anyone who watched saw how those tires failed-- terminating in a violent explosion. They couldn't let the drivers race on that tire, so what we got was 168 laps of tire testing. Too bad, because NASCAR is really on a roll as far as popularity.

                            Re: nascar?

Tire competition would cause a concern because of safety. Hoosier and Goodyear used to be both in Nascar some 15 years ago.

Nascar started on the decline when Bill France allowed Toyota to compete just for some more sponsor $$$. What is next Hyundai and Honda?

It is bad enough that the IRL has 1 chassis and 1 engine.

F1 teams like Ferrari spend so much $$$ that they have unfair advantage. Why watch a race where the manufacturer does not build anything for the common person? But Fiat is the parent company of Ferrari I guess.

The problem was the Indy Diamond Grind surface and the Goodyear tires.

BF Goodrich is manufactured by Michelin (sp?)

I think nascar is getting more about the money they make. It is not as good as it was in early years. If you ask me I think the COT is costing the owners more money instead of saving them money.
