I have a brand new desk top. It is a custom built. I play games on it all the time and now the computer is starting to freeze on me during a race. The computer meets all the standards if not exceeds them and still freezes and pauses for a couple of seconds and then resumes where it was. The games I play on it are GTR2 and Race 07 and Test drive unlimited. These games are compatible with my comp. Does the way I describe what is happening mean i need a upgrade? I am not a computer tech kind of person.

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
Define custom built? Like by you, or custom options from Dell, etc....
Could also be adware/virus kind of a problem....
Or Vista, though I have never had a problem with it.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR Blue

Chris aka PorscheGuy997 knows a lot about computers, maybe he'll chime in.
I'm really not sure what it could be though.

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
Thanks, Ryan!
Well, I have an idea of the problem, but let's start out with the easy stuff.
Are you playing online? Even some of the fastest internet service providers will stutter occasionally. When you say it freezes, is it gradual? Do the frames slow down during intense scenes or is it completely random? Has the computer ever restarted after a freeze in the game?
Have you tweaked the graphic settings in the games? Try setting them on low or auto and playing through. This will ease some of the stress on the graphics card.
When gaming, a computer will produce the most frames per second when there are no background applications. That means that web browsers and other programs should be closed. It could be a virus or trojan that is causing the stutter. When gaming, you can pause, hit the Windows key, and then hit Ctrl, Alt, Del. Select 'Performance' and it will show how much memory your system is using.
Now for the more complicated stuff...
It would really help if you could post the type of processor, amount of ram, and the video card.
The first thing that come to mind when a game stutters is the ram. 1gig is about the minimum for gaming and 2gigs is great. An older graphics card can also make games sluggish. If you haven't done so recently, it's always smart to take some canned air and spray out the dust.
Today's games are incredibly graphic intensive. Even if your system does meet the standards, it may only be able to run everything on the lowest graphic setting.
I hope that wasn't too confusing...
Feel free to call if you need to!Chris

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
I would agree with Chris.
For more information, please post your configuration (brand / model)
Motherboard, memory, processor, video card, sound card, OS, Drivers of each part
IF you did build by your own the computer and you have a video card and a sound card (not he one that the motherboard brings) if can be that the IRQ value is being shared by the sound card and video card. But let's take things slow and try to fix them by eliminating the simple things first

Some have issues with Vista working with GTR2.
I used to have issues with GTR2. Serious crashes after 5 minutes of play, but found that the Mem Sticks were bad when we finished the build. During the summer, the game used skip pretty bad, but ive done my best to keep my room cool when playing. Just make sure you have the latest drivers and keep the up operating system updated. Turn Off " ALL " autmated updates and dont run any other operations while playing. Could be any other programs giving you issues.
You could search in that forum for the same issues you have. Some lead to conclusions and others dont. Only problem I have now is when I trail brake into a corner with a car in front of me...doesnt seem to like it since the FRP seems to slow a bit and not as smooth as I like, but gets smooth after a few turns.

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
I paid a computer guy build it for me. He knows my dad and my dad told him to build a new one with windows vista. Yes I do play online but not much.It just freezes all of a sudden no slowing down while playing. No I have to pull the main power cord on the computer I know it is bad for it but I tried Ctrl+alt+delete & Ctrl+Alt+esc and nothing happend so i had to pull the plug which it did restart. The motherboard system is made by a company called Gigabyte and it is the S-series. It supports Intel Core 2-multi core processors. I have the graphics card in the middle of all of its functions.
Thanks guys I hope I decribed everthing good enough.Alex

Control / ALT / Delete & Control / ALT / Esc. is a non function when in the game.
Are you running the NON CD or with CD? There is a recent thread where the non cd version works fine with Vista.
Any PC can run this game, but are limited with the Eye Candy.

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
How long ago was it built? In addition to providing graphics card manufacturer, make and model you should also check what driver version you are running. If it was automatically updated you may need to rollback to an older version. If it has not been updated, you may need to update it...

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
When the game freezes do you notice if it's during a point where a lot is going on in the game on the screen. Also if it freezes, once you restart are you able play for a longer period of time. Also, do you notice if it freezes after the same amount of time. Something could also be over heating. I would also follow the advice of turning all the graphics down and then playing the game to see what happens. That can pin point an error very quickly. -(sometimes)

I have the Directx 9.0c on the computer wich is compatibl with my graphics card that I do not know which brand it is.The Race 07 game has a recommended 2 gig ram so that could be the culprit.Alex

Re: My computer keeps freezing? it is a brand new Computer
Yeah just to add, memory is a computers best friend. My system has 4 gigs but windows xp doesn't display the full 4 for some reason on my pc. Anway, if memory is the issue then you will see a difference not only in the game but in the normal actions of the pc.
