  • Pumping gas... cutting off

    Hi Folks,

I recently made my annual summer trek from Miami to Atlanta and back with various stops in between to waste money and have fun. Along the way, something weird happened a couple of times.

At some of the gas stations (not all) I would put in the nozzle and start to pump and it would immediately cut off. Sometimes I would see little blops of gas spurt out. I would wriggle the nozzle and try different angles and finally found that if I turned it totally sideways and almost upsidedown it would pump.

I also noticed that each station where this happened had older style pumps where you have to lift the little lever rather than push the start button.

Is there something weird about these old style pumps? No one else seemed to be having a problem. Perhaps there's some strange shape of the Mustang tank that I"m not aware of?

Any insights would be appreciated. Curiosity has gotten the better of me.

I have had problems with that on small foreign rental cars at stations where the nozzle has one of those sleeves.

Something in the sleeve senses contact, and the car didn't make contact, so I had to hold the sleeve up myself.

There was a problem with the filler necks in the new Mustangs. Let me see if I can remember where I saw the information (it is actually all over, it is a fairly common problem).

I just had a problem with my Jeep at a station a few weeks ago. It took me forever to find a spot where the nozzle would work. I've had it happen on my last truck too at a few different stations. Not sure what causes it but it sure is frustrating.

You did not mention what year Mustang you have but there was a problem with the fuel tank on them causing the "slow fill" or incomplete fill problem. the following TSB addresses the problem. Hope this helps

          TSB 05-15-12
          08/08/05
FUEL FILL SLOW, OR DIFFICULT TO FILL -
          VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 4/26/2005

          FORD:
          2005 Mustang

This article supersedes TSB 05-4-8 to update the vehicle build date information.
          ISSUE
Some 2005 Mustang vehicles built before 4/26/2005, may exhibit the fuel tank being slow or difficult to fill. The condition may be described as, repeated rapid shut-offs of the filling station pump nozzle, or multiple nozzle shut-offs when attempting to fill the fuel tank. The condition may be due to the fuel tank vapor venting system inside the fuel tank.

          ACTION
Install a new fuel tank. Refer to Section 310-01 of the Workshop Manual. The new fuel tank has a revised internal venting system to improve fuel filling.

NOTE SOME PUMP NOZZLE SHUT-OFFS MAY BE DUE TO THE FILLING STATION PUMP DELIVERING THE FUEL TOO QUICKLY. THIS IS NORMAL.

Just found another TSB relating to more Years of Mustang. Good luck

            TSB 07-21-12
            10/29/07
FUEL FILL SLOW, OR DIFFICULT TO FILL
            FORD:
            2005-2007 Mustang

This article supersedes TSB 06-3-13 to update the vehicle model years.
            ISSUE
Some 2005-2007 Mustang vehicles may experience premature automatic shut off of the fuel fill nozzle. Several variables, including variations in fuel pump nozzles, fuel flow rates, and fuel flow pressure may result in the premature automatic shut off of the fuel fill nozzle making it more difficult to fill the fuel tank.

The automatic shut off in the fuel fill nozzle may trigger multiple times after delivering several gallons of fuel or it may trigger repeatedly when attempting to establish fuel flow into the fuel tank. The latter concern may be more common when adding fuel to a vehicle where the fuel level is at or above 1/2 full.
            ACTION
            Refer to Service Procedure.

            SERVICE PROCEDURE
On 2005 Mustangs vehicles built before 4/26/2005 that experience premature automatic shut-off of the fuel fill nozzle more than occasionally may benefit from replacing the fuel tank with a revised design tank per TSB 05-15-12. The revised design fuel tank may reduce the occurrence of premature automatic shut off.
On 2005 Mustang vehicles built on or after 4/26/2005 and 2006-2007 model year vehicles were built with the revised design fuel tank. As a result, replacing the fuel tank on these vehicles will not change the occurrence of automatic fuel fill shut off.
Occurrences of premature shut-off may be resolved or improved by using a different filling station fuel pump. Unauthorized modifications and/or alterations to the vehicle are not reimbursable under warranty and are not recommended for this issue.
            OTHER APPLICABLE ARTICLES: 05-15-12
WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT : Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

              Re: Pumping gas... cutting off

I had a 00 Mustang and I would fill up 95% of the time at the same gas station using the same pump. Well one day the pump was taken so I used a different pump at the same gas station and the nozzle kept popping out. Weird but that was the only problem I have ever had in the 4 yrs 80k I put on the car.

I had an Chevrolet S10 that had the same problem... it was a big pain, just dealt with it, should have checked with the dealer might have been a TSB for that as well.
