You might want to make sure that the memory is the correct type and speed for your c'puter.
Yes, right selection of memory (and BIOS etc settings for memory) do matter when it comes to stability. It is already on 'to do'.

Considering he had (from what I gather from our phone call) this problem almost from the beginning and that service supposedly exchanged all components culprit should not be heatsink. Unless CPU/heatsink was never changed, etc. All possible culprits of heat issues will be looked into though.

We need to find culprit first though so it doesn't end up money wasted.

PSU has been outruled as he recently changed PSU and problem persists. However, we are checking his complete power quality, from outlet onward.

None of requirements he listed call for any of that.

I am glad your experience was not negative. Obviously, New York state felt that number of people whose experience was rather negative is big enough to warrant the lawsuit over their experiences and practices Dell was engaging in.

My personal experience with Dell and their customer service / technical support when I was helping my clients that purchased higher end Dell equipment (servers) too was bad. I do not remember single time when it was not bad.

This is where I will draw the line on the discussion of Dell as this is thread about helping Joe, plus I don't want it to turn into bashing of any company.

              Re: HELP!! Computer help please.

If you're looking for a notebook computer, I'd highly recommend a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad. My ThinkPad was purchased in 1999 and was my main computer for about 5 years with no major hardware problems. I still have it and it has saved me multiple times over the years when my desktop was out of commission.

ZoranC, when HP launches a Desktop/Laptop hey design everything, including the BIOS, so you have a pretty locked up BIOS, you can't really change the values of the memory setting nor cpu, you only have basic stuff like diagnostics/boot sequence/main information but you can't really change the setting of memory like FSB/timmings/voltage. If the memory has been changed by HP (they should have put the same memory type)

Just wanted to say this because I know you are in direct contact with Joe so you are his help right know I believe.

*Post the desktop P/N once you get it, this way I can get the exact information if you request it

Thank you! Yes, you are correct, that is how HP handles BIOS settings. I keep forgetting it is HP we are talking about and walking down my regular toubleshooting checklist. If I had it in front of me it would have been obvious 'd'oh me '

Moment I have all part numbers I will report them.

Hey, Joe, how is voltage on that outlet looking? I hope your silence means just that you have been busy.

                    Re: HELP!! Computer help please.

Usually I am on my laptop. Today I am on the desk top. It froze three times today.

The voltage from the outlet viaries from 110.6 to 111.

From the power pack/surge dohicky it is an even 111 volts.

Things you told me about power in your household was what made me curious there, and while one can have good voltage yet bad power we are getting into area of diminishing returns so let's say for now that power is OK.

We have reached point where we need to check that puppy in person. Give me a call and we can work out when we could do that.

In the meantime, I forgot to ask, do you always freeze in same program or no pattern in where you freeze?

Joe, voltage from the socket seem fine.

How many sticks of memory do you have?
