  • Anyone considering a scooter?

    Hi Folks!

With a tank of gas being in the neighorhood of $50 (give or take depending on your tank size) is anyone considering or already bought a scooter?

If so, anyone have any recommendations for one that's under $2,000 and goes at least 55 mph? I don't want to be annoyingly slow on the road if I do get one to drive to work.

    Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

I have my 2006 Kawasaki ZZR 600 (ZX-6R), I am getting near 54 MPG and costs me 25 dollars to fill up only reason why my bike is expensive is because it has to take 91 octane.
I would recommend to anybody who wants a small motorcycle I would say the Kawasaki Ninja 250 awesome gas MPG's 60+, Plus you get the sporty look, and it comes in the famous Kawi green. Kawasaki has a awesome line of bikes and in my opinion they have the biggest variety. The only problem with a 250 Ninja is that the 08 model costs $3,000. I had a 2004 Kawasaki Ninja 250 and bought it off ebay for $1,500 dollars. It was in great shape. Check ebay motors and search Kawasaki Ninja 250. I will say this the 250 Ninjas have awesome resale value. I paid $1,500 for mine and put 5,000 miles on it with the total Mileage adding up to 12,000 miles when I put it up for sale and I sold it for $1,750.

      Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

I just got back from the Yamaha dealer and will definitely have a scooter by the end of June. I'm pretty much torn between the Zuma and the C3. Those things get 115 mpg and seem perfect for me since I only live about 3.5 miles from my job.

Bad news is there isn't a scooter (by the big guys: Yamaha, Kawa, Honda, Suzuki, Vespa) that is Under 2k that goes 55mph. You could get a 125 Vino, About 2.7k, the speedometer reads 80 but 55-60 is about as fast as you can go.

        Does this count?

This is what a lot of people are doing in my country, Dominican Republic, they are buying a converter to chance the gasoline source to gas (cooking gas), they are getting it for about USD $1,000.00 (really depends on the quality of the system), some are automatic that switch from gas to gasoline and vice versa and some are manual that you have to hit a switch and chance it your self.

I haven't done this, you loose power, it's DANGEROUS and I'm not having like a tank in my trunk. For you to know why people are going this; minimum wage here it RD$4,500 = USD$131.57 and a gallon of gas from today on it's RD$199.50 = USD$ 5.8 and Gas is RD$59.95 = 1.75

This is really worrying for all of us
KEEP ON DETAILING! (I know I forget about the problems and everything when I'm doing it)

          Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

i am noticing them more and more around here. they do no good in the winter though, but you can save alot in the warm months.
most though go for the small ones to avoid the motorcycle license.

i have also noticed more ppl are riding pedal bikes with kid trailers behind them. works great for grocery trips.

            Considered........

It's 50cc of fun. Also rated @115mpg, but haven't put that to the test yet. I was going for the Honda Ruckus but they are pretty much sold out everywhere. Also if you are going to be buying a scooter any time soon you have pretty much no leverage in negotiating the price because of the demand.

Now to make this Meguiar Related. This was in the showroom for about a week waiting for me to pick it up. The area behind the seat was swirled up.

              Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

Motorcycle works for me....42-50 mpg, a lot more stable, capable of going way faster than I should be, can carry lots of stuff, and just plain fun!

Scooters are good, though, especially in a little town. Pretty much for me to go anywhere I have to get on roads with 55-70 mph speed limits so it's not that practical for me. A lot of people on Amelia Island are getting them, though.

                Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

so i thought a scooter was a 50cc displacement engine or less to avoid needing a motorcycle license.
well i am getting corrected often at work about this.
i am not totally agreeing with being corrected though.
i keep hearing there are displacements up to 200cc and they are still called scooters.
HOW can they still be called scooters with that big of engine?

2 more of my friends got scooters this past couple weeks. this puts the total to 5.

                  Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

Difference between a scooter and motorcycle is the way it's riden. You straddle a motorcycle and a scooter has a "step through" body. Displacements don't matter, I think. But.......

In California a "Scooter" is pretty much one of those skateboards with a lawnmower engine that you stand on and go. California calls what most know as "Scooter" (Vespas, Hondas, Yamahas) are catagorized as "Motor Driven Cycles" which are different than Motorcycles. Also "Scooters" (stand up toy things) still requires a license to operate, an M2 license. An M2 license was introduced a few years ago because some politician got tired of kids riding around on those mini-bikes. An M1 license qualifies almost anything with a motor and two wheels.

The only time displacement comes into play is that in california a Motorcyce or "Motor Driven Cycle" has to be 200cc or over to be freeway legal.

Now get ready to get your mind blown.

If your motorcycle has a sidecar you don't need an M1 license. Also those new Can Am Spiders (Two Wheels in The front, one in the back) don't require a motorcycle license as well. And yet it is illegal to operate a quad/atv on a public street.

                    Re: Anyone considering a scooter?

thanx for that bit of info.
the same may or may not apply to me in MN though.
guess if i get serious about it i will have to check more into it.

locally atv's are allowed on some roads. then again i am "in the sticks" so to speak.
