  • Appreciate your detailer...

Long story short, I've done a few cars for an individual(customer). Just details, no buffing or polishing. Just washing, cleaning engine, waxing, cleaning interior, shampooing seats/carpets, etc... No matter what, he has always complained about the price. Says that I'm overpriced for the work that needs to be done, and we take waaaay too long. Price is $160 for cars, $185 for trucks and SUV's. It takes 1 person 3-4 hours to complete. Well within the industry standards.

So anyway, he keeps complaining, yet he still calls us back out time after time. So one day I proposed a challenge to him. I told him that if he could do it faster with the same or better results, then I would do his next car or truck for free. He agreed, but I didn't think he would actually follow through with it

He shows up at the shop the other day with his work clothes, and tells me that he's ready to prove me wrong. I let him use my equiptment, and I coached him a little, but not too much. I wanted him to do a good job, but I also wanted some amunition at the end

6 hours later, he was sweating his butt off, holding his lower back and just looking at me with hate in his eyes He finally broke down and said "aren't you going to help me finish this [edited] thing"

In the end, I helped him finished the rest of it and we sat down and had a frosty adult beverage together. He never admitted defeat, but I could see it in his sweaty eyes! Guess we'll just have to wait and see what he has to say next time we do one of his cars for him

Thats a good one Nick. He may not admit defeat. But he will be back. That will be his admission. Thats good.

Very nice! Man it's a hard job, people think cleaning / polishing / correcting a paint of a car is some easy stuff, lots of people keep saying this until they try

          Indeed.

over on SCD, a young man was writing an ad for craiglist and had his prices. I helped him re-write it (not sure if he used it) but spelled out the 5 step process so the future customer who spends five bucks at a coin op can see what his 150-200 bucks is going for. Couple years ago, I thought it would be insane to pay 200 bucks for a detail, now that I've done one, not sure thats enough , Excursions are big!

          Good Show!!

Serves him right. People like that should actually experience it before saying stuff like that.

Detailing cars is hard work and you have to work fast, not lollygag... plus customer's usually have high, if not unreal expectations... that's why it's always a good idea to first evaluate the customer and then evaluate the car, there are some people you will never make happy and for that reason you don't want to work on their car.

Thanks for sharing this story Nick.

I really like how you handled the situation, I bet he wont admit it, but you made a believer out of him...

That's a great story! It's cool you let him use your shop and equipment too so he couldn't say that he didn't have the right tools.

That's awesome! I can't believe he actually agreed to the challenge.

                      Re: Appreciate your detailer...

People see adds for a Express Detail for $49.00 and they think that a full detail is only $10.00 more. They have no idea on how much work a full detail is. A Express detail is not a detail at all , but simply a wash and wax.

That's a great story! I would put money on it that he now has a greater appreciation for the services you provide.

Great story and i agree to many people just dont know what we really do. I have had a customer tell me they want my full detail and when i told them it was 200 they said " What!! for a car wash!" which my full detail includes washing ( two bucket method ) claying, polishing, waxing. interior carpet shampoo and stain removing, dressing, leather cleaning and conditioning ect.. Personally i think 200 is low but once again alot of people just dont really know what we go through to get the results we do.
