  • Taco curse nearly killed me...

So I left from my house to San Pedro to drop my truck off for Tom to finish her up(well for now at least)
Well I started hearing a really funny noise on my right front side. So i pulled off an exit to look at my suspension(btw. i just put a set of wheels on the day before, they were put on with an impact gun so I thought they were fine so I didnt think to look at the lug nuts). So I hopped back on for about 2 miles until the noise got REALLY bad. I pulled off the Lemon st. exit in Anaheim. off the 91 into a Lowes parking lot. At first I thought I had busted a balljoint(because the bushing was messed up and I am pretty worn out so didnt think clearly about it). Then I finallyy look and realize there is ONE LUG NUT holding my wheel on. ONE! Its a miracle that it didnt fall of or break the wheel. It is a miracle, because if you dont know most of the time when lugs go they all go. God was watching over me, Tom and me both realized that. I was going nearly 70mph with ONE lug nut. A 30 mile trip and $187.50 later for a tow(thankfully my insurance has roadside coverage so i should be able to get reimbursed for that. Moral: Dont always trust your mechanic and ALWAYS use a torque wrench..
(Im gonna go buy one very soon actually and some more tools, i barely have any so its not exactllyy good).

Meanwhile now my wheels all have 4 lugs each cuz he took one off each to put on that wheel. we might replace the wheel studs we'll see here.

In a week she'll be beautiful I'll keep you all updated.

I have had the pleasure of losing all of my lug nuts one time while driving. Glad you made it without an accident or injury!

It seems this is more common than most people reallize.

I better go purchase a wheel torque wrench as well and check my lug nuts.

As a general rule I only use the air gun for initial spin-on of the lugs. I then torque wrench the nuts to spec, take the car for a couple block drive with right and left turns and then re-torque the nuts to spec. You were pretty lucky. Now, considering that your car is missing a lug nut on each wheel, I'd recommend that you go to the parts store immediately and get this fixed and torque the lug nuts with the proper tools.

I own a torque wrench and use it all the time , ....er except that one time and my rear wheel fell off!

I lost my center cap once a few miles down the road from buying new tires.

on my 73 Old's Cutlass I had same situation, just put new wheels on and no one told me to re-torque the lugs and I was a kid and didn't know better. Now, I have 3-4 torque wrenches and re-torque them after getting home from a tire rotation, no problems since.

Glad your okay and didn't get hurt or injure the Taco.

Close call there buddy, glad you're OK though. A torque wrench is a must but be ready for a surprise if you've never used one before: back in my younger days we'd just crank those lug nuts down with everything we had, figuring the wheels should be on really tight, right? We always had to work to get them off later, so we just figured we were doing it right.

But the fist time I tried to remove a wheel after it had been properly torqued down I was a bit scared, thinking they had started to work loose. Truth is, on most passenger cars the torque spec is somewhere in the 85~100lb-ft range and the lug nuts actually come off quite easily when you need to change a tire. If you've never properly torqued your lug nuts before then you could be in for a surprise.

Yeah Joe, those tire shops like to just bang the center caps out from behind. I recently bought new tires and 3 of the 4 center caps were damaged by the tire shop so they ended up buying me a whole new set.

Check with your manufacturer for proper torque technique. For my vette you torque it 3 times. First at 50, then 75, the final at 100.

                        Its 85ft. lbs. for mine.
                        I knew that already.
Yes I know how these things work its just im lacking in tools.
I would have changed the wheels myself if I have had the tools.
anyway time to go tool shopping.

The recommended torque goes by the bolt pattern/size.

My car is 5x4.5 and the rec. torque is 100 ft./lbs.
My truck is 5x5.5 and the rec. torque is 120 ft./lbs.

My RX330 calls for 76 ft/lb which really does not seem very tight. LOL! That's why I drive it around a few blocks and re-torque the nuts to be sure.

                              A word about torque wrenches...

Make sure to read the calibration instructions. Some will require you to return it to zero every time.

Yes, we ruined a brand new Snap-On that way...

Precision Instruments makes a really nice torque wrench (supplier for Snap-on).
