California: Police Raid Car Enthusiast Gathering, Generate Revenue
Police raid Riverside, California parking lot to issue modified car tickets at local car enthusiast gathering.

Parking lot raidUsing $503,000 in federal and state gas tax revenue to pay for overtime, nine police agencies in Riverside, California sent more than one hundred police officers to surround a gathering of automotive enthusiasts. Owners of imported sport compact cars had gathered at the Canyon Crossing shopping center on Friday night to swap stories, talk about their passion for cars and show off the latest enhancements to their rides. At around 11pm police surprised participants by blocking all exits with fifty police cruisers. Officers then began a warrantless search and interrogation operation of the 150 vehicles that were present.

"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"

Police issued a total of forty-eight tickets for "engine modifications" with police accusing the owners of the parked vehicles of being street racers. Another fifty tickets were issued for paperwork violations, dark window tinting and lack of a front license plate. The most revenue, however, will be generated from the fees imposed on twenty vehicles that were confiscated. Despite labeling the parking lot raid as taking place at a "street racing venue," Riverside Police offered no evidence that any street racing actually took place.

Across the state, gas tax funds are regularly used to fund similar crackdowns that generate big revenue. In 2004, the California Highway Patrol issued a total of 101,553 "modified car" citations worth $10.5 million according to CHP data obtained by TheNewspaper.

Other law enforcement agencies participating in Friday night's raid included the California Highway Patrol, Riverside County Sheriff's Department, and police from Baldwin Park, Fontana, Irwindale, Moreno Valley, Ontario and Mount San Jacinto Community College.

I wonder if that parking lot was privately owned, and if so, if that has any bearing on the case. It's one thing for these guys to be pulled over on a public road, but to be raided in a private parking lot is totally different.

        Yes 'Big Brother'

I'm very sorry for painting amazing pictures. I started when I was young, and just kept investing more time and money. As I grew older the pictures became more and more amazing. My talent and understanding of my favorite hobby in the world grew every hour, and countless hours I poured into my painting.

My paintings don't really do anything for anybody. Most people think they look pretty darn amazing, other than that nothing much. Now, they don't sell for six digits, but I still invest a lot of time into my paintings. My family things I'm crazy for purchasing an 8,000 dollar painting with 69,000 miles on it, then loving it as much as I do. But hey thats just me.

WHAT? You think I'm crazy too? So crazy I should get together with my 150 friends and pay hundreds of thousands in tickets?

        I PLEAD CAR CRAZY.

(Note: No I havn't 'suped' up my car, but its what those folks have done so ignore that small discrepancy)

          "imported sport compact cars"

          Likely means "ricer"

That being said its not like this group is a bunch of guys at a classic car rally, or even a muscle car rally. These are the folks with neon lights on their driver and nos in the engine. Its not like anyone here would be in danger (even if they had a few modifications). Personally I hate the look and feel of those cars, BUT I agree with their right to do whatever they want in regards to their cars. If they drive "spiritedly" once in awhile late at night big wup. Any sort of racing of course should stay on the track, and if they drive arrogantly through traffic during the day, send the tickets out then.

That being said, the entire theory behind their reasoning is a total joke. Most of those cars probably still get better gas milage than mine even though they are modified. I think its cute they try to pay for it with gas taxes. Pretty shallow though.

Unfortunately there is a percentage of the car hobbie that has people who do really dumb and illegal things....and that ruins it for the majority of enthusiasts.

              Re: car crazy? a crime?

According to that, the CHP could pull over any car besides a Civic, Corolla, etc., and issue a ticket for having too much power?

There were probably some illegal things done to those cars, but to just pull up without cause, warrantless, and search and seize because they were there is a bit much. That has got to be pushing the 4th a bit.

Also, since they used $503,000 to do this, they had better hope nothing comes of it. Because I'm sure that much money couldn't have been used to actually fix some roads or even build some.

                Re: car crazy? a crime?

I agree that there were probably some questionable mods done. But to have 150 cars on a private lot. I would think someone, some where had to get permission to have this many cars show up. If a car is parked, where is the intent to race? I think this was terrible. However if no permission was giving then they had the right to break it up. Not issue that many citations.

haha, wait, do the cops in cali really not have anything better to do? They have no evidence of anything and they surrounded the place like they were selling drugs? Thats a classic right there!

Just another case of (BIG) government putting it's nose, where it doesn't belong, someone should sue the police for unnecessary harassment....
