  • Replacing my top-- Help!

I drive the vehicle seen in my avatar, 2000 v6 mustang. The top is wearing in places, and the rear curtain is leaking badly. If you get even reasonably close to it stains are very evident. The eight year old top needs to be laid to rest and a new one needs to come in.

Bottom line--- I don't want to pay someone to do this for me. I want to do this myself.... but I'm scared to do so!

I've been reading and it seems that no matter your experience level you can put out a good install, or a bad install after 40 hours. I'm going to try to find a book with a guide in it, beg a relative, and pray. Most recent quote was for $700.

Also questioning doing a lot of prep work myself, and if I'm getting in over my head in regards to replacement send it down to the shop.

Anyone have any experience replacing tops? Specifically mustang tops?

New top is black, to match my new headlights. Very excited.

No experience on this topic, maybe someone else will chime in or post this on a Mustang forum.

Here is the only reply I have gotten so far on 3 Mustang forums...
From the lack of responses, I'm guessing this is something best left for the pros.

I can only say that I know of someone who has replaced his on his foxbody and everything went well but honestly if you have no experience replacing a convertible top you're better off letting a professional do it. It's too risky. If you mess it up the top could leak, create wind noise, etc. 50restos have replacement tops if he's looking for one. I'm getting mine replaced with a cloth top from a professional shop this year. It'll be expensive but it'll be done right and I'll have a limited time warranty on it. I'd rather go this route than taking the chance of screwing it up myself. I even have a friend of mine who has replaced a top on a car and has volunteered to replace mine and I told him no thanks.

            One more

i'm going through the same thing with mine right now (200 gt vert). it *****. i just spent all the money on the vert top materials. now i'm buying new ford weatherstripping for another $300+. I got a local Mexican place that does work on me and my friends daily drivers. even they want $500 for labor. so altogether with materials and labor this whole vert top replacement is going to end up being well over $1000
i simply dont have the time to even attempt doing a top installation. all the people i know that have done it just refuse to have anything to do with it.
the local ford dealer here wont even do vert tops. they'd said to go to a upholstery place lol

I've heard it's a time consuming job to do yourself. If you've got the time, patience and ability I say go for it. Personally, I'd save and have a shop do it.

                Re: Replacing my top-- Help!

I'd eventually be able to find the time, and thus the patience. The one thing I am concerned about is the ability. Is even a slightly problematic top a worthy sacrifice for 700 dollars? Probably not... but thats still 700 dollars. To a kid working his way through college with a leaking top that is a lot of money not easily replaced. With my current job it would be no problem, but I'm looking to save money to quit so that I may focus on school. Blasted Engineering degrees...

                  Re: Replacing my top-- Help!

One more complication--- top is "94-99" which the merchant declares is still the correct top. The uphostery shop declares that 94-95 and 96-99 are slightly different within themselves, and declare that this top won't work.

I'm unsure of what the nuances are between the years, but I'm going to look around.

Tyler, might I recieve the links to the forums you frequent? I've yet to find a mustang forum I can call home. Thanks so much for the time you spent for a fellow stang owner.

                    Re: Replacing my top-- Help!

The main Mustang home for me is http://www.fnsweet.com. It is the largest (and really the only) Roush Enthusiast site on the internet. The name does not mean what it sounds like (not supposed to), but most of us there use it like that . Any Mustang Enthusiasts are welcome really. LOTS AND LOTS of Mustang information, help, and good times. G.T.G.'s all over the states. Discounts on parts, etc... Definite 5-Star Mustang site, it is the best I have been on!

The other ones are BMC (http://www.blackmustangclub.com) and CA Mustangs (http://www.ca-mustangs.com).
