    Re: Battery Opinions

I can't remember exactly why, but the dry cell batteries like Optima are good for certain (extreme) conditions. Other than that, kind of overboard.

Some of the "extreme" conditions include a lot of shaking and bouncing around (like off road 4 wheeling) because all that jumping around can cause a led acid batteries cells to loose holding a charge. Since they are also a dry cell it can be mounted in any position without any leaking of the electrolite causing corrosion of other parts of the car. Left unused, It holds a charge longer than a led acid battery and will still start a vehicle. I also seem to recall they are a little lighter than a led acid battery but it wasn't significant enough for me to consider the value of that.

The Yellow Tops are a deep cycle battery and can be fully discharged and then charged up and not loose any of their effectiveness. They will hold a charge just as long as new. This can be done a number of times without any negative effects to the battery. These are also more expensive than the red tops. These are typically used with stereo installations that run during shows. It can power all the equipment during the show and still start the car later. Sometimes multiple batteries are installed for extensive configurations.

I was thinking things like off-roading, rally racing, rock crawling, even track events.
        Thanks for the clarification!

          Re: Battery Opinions

Had my Drag Boat for 20 years, used Sears, Optima, Interstate, Costco, etc. for batteries. The Drag Boat engine had a 12.5 to 1 compression so it took a lot of oomph to turn it over and all these batteries worked just fine as long as they were new and in good shape.

          FWIW

          p.s.

Boat had a tendency to shake things apart including the battery so we replaced it every other year no matter what, it's not fun to have a battery that won't start the engine in the middle of the lake, so we made sure that never happened.
