  • Possible oil reserve in US

I received this from my son today. He works in the service sector of the oil industry so his resources are pretty reliable. I thought it was pretty interesting and hopefully true. The website www.nextenergynews.com is pretty cool also.

Massive Oil Deposit Could Increase US Reserves by 10X
America is sitting on top of a super massive 200 billion barrel Oil Field that could potentially make America Energy Independent and until now has largely gone unnoticed. Thanks to new technology the Bakken Formation in North Dakota could boost America’s Oil reserves by an incredible 10 times, giving western economies the trump card against OPEC’s short squeeze on oil supply and making Iranian and Venezuelan threats of disrupted supply irrelevant.

In the next 30 days the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) will release a new report giving an accurate resource assessment of the Bakken Oil Formation that covers North Dakota and portions of South Dakota and Montana. With new horizontal drilling technology it is believed that from 175 to 500 billion barrels of recoverable oil are held in this 200,000 square mile reserve that was initially discovered in 1951. The USGS did an initial study back in 1999 that estimated 400 billion recoverable barrels were present but with prices bottoming out at $10 a barrel back then the report was dismissed because of the higher cost of horizontal drilling techniques that would be needed, estimated at $20-$40 a barrel.

It was not until 2007, when EOG Resources of Texas started a frenzy when they drilled a single well in Parshal N.D. that is expected to yield 700,000 barrels of oil that real excitement and money started to flow in North Dakota. Marathon Oil is investing $1.5 billion and drilling 300 new wells in what is expected to be one of the greatest booms in Oil discovery since Oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1938.

The US imported about 14 million barrels of Oil per day in 2007 , which means US consumers sent about $340 Billion Dollars over seas building palaces in Dubai and propping up unfriendly regimes around the World, if 200 billion barrels of oil at $90 a barrel are recovered in the high plains the added wealth to the US economy would be $18 Trillion Dollars which would go a long way in stabilizing the US trade deficit and could cut the cost of oil in half in the long run.

Thanks for sharing this article and lets hope these reserves can be extracted and turned into usable energy, let's also hope more are found and it would be nice to see Anwar opened up for drilling as we do have the technology to extract the oil with a small footprint as well as some of our coastal regions where other country's are slated to start exploring and removing the oil regardless of what we do.

Let's hope that translates into lower price at the pump. It's $3.61 now for Chevron 87 octane around here.

I really wouldn't mind paying that at the pump, if the money is staying here in the US. I run 91 min., but to me, it is where the money is going.

I hope this is true and works out.

Not to take away from the good news, but crude supply is a minor problem. We are maxed out in regard to refining capacity.

All vehicles should be hybrids or HEMI's.

As one who considers the present form of hybrids a dead end, I'll have to disagree......now the Hemi, different story. I really like my Northstar but could see myself returning to my Mopar roots......but pushrods?

I wonder if the oil deposits are why the Lakota have been a little more vocal lately? Maybe they'll be the ones building refineries instead of casinos.

I think it's in our best interest to find more oil sources - no matter the location.

Also, the idea of punishing oil companies by raising taxes is ridiculous. In the end, we pay more!

Well, I figure it'd be a happy medium for both the politically left and right.

yes, oil is not the problem, refineries are. No new one has been built in the last 30 years. Enviro regs makes it too costly too build them.

If this report is right, and we could get some refineries built, there would be relief at the pump. All we can do is hope.

Well 2009 will see the first hybrid Hemi in the Durango.

But I meant cars should have two engine options: Hybrid or HEMI.

Ah jeeze....I was just joking about a hybrid hemi, but Chrysler is really going to build one? That's almost sacreligious. I shouldn't say this (lest someone at Chrysler pick it up and think it's an even better idea) but maybe it'll be an inline four hemi hybrid.
