  • How Much To Pay For A New Car?

What is a good price for a new car? My mom is going to be buying a 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited 4X4 this weekend. I've been reading some forums getting some pretty varied information and figured with all the smart people here I would get some solid advice. That and I know there are some car dealers here too.

On a Toyota Tundra forum they talk about 25% off sticker price. On another forum they say $100 over invoice. There is a big difference between those. The place she is buying it from told her they have set prices and don't negotiate. If need be, there are three Toyota dealers near me I could negotiate with.

Thanks in advance! I'll be sure to post some photos when it gets detailed. She likes black but I think I have her talked out of it. One black car is more then enough work for me. Plus they live about 2 hours away.

If you buy a car at 'Invoice' the dealer is still making money..There are things called hold back and factory to dealer incentives and other things that the factory pays to the dealer that isn't shown on the invoice.

Go to Edmunds.com and figure out what the dealer invoice is. Offer that amount. Do some research..on holdback, etc..Make sure you mention it when negotiating...

Dealers are experts at getting the highest price possible. So don't believe them..Do your research ahead of time..Print out lots of stuff and make sure they see it...They won't like it but too bad for them...

Since its a SUV and gas is nearing $4'/gallon you have lots of leverage..

If all else fails find a broker and pay them their cost (maybe $250 over dealer cost).

Go to Edmunds.com. Go to the new car section, select the make & model, fill in the blanks & it will give you the sticker price, the invoice price, and what people are paying in your area. If you have any questions let me know.

Edmunds provides what they call TMV (True Market Value) and it's pretty close to what you would see in your area, I was in the states this last weekend and I was seeing a couple of cars and the prices were very close.

I agree about checking out edmunds. Although, they don't like black cars (maybe you should stick with black). I used their appraisal tool and they took money off my sell value because my car is black.

Thanks for the information! The price the non negotiating dealer gave her seems about half way between invoice and msrp. I'm thinking I can do better. I'm going to go to the local dealer and see if they will go invoice or the TMV. AAA might be a good option too, I'll have to look into that.

Tyler I noticed that too, they took off like $22 for black and $12 for the dark gray but added $12 for red. lol

Re: How Much To Pay For A New Car?

Toyota is not really know for negotiating so good luck. I'd be reluctant to pay over dealer invoice for any vehicle. The stealerships are still making money regardless of what the bozo salesman and salesmanager says. I guess they want you to believe that they can lose money but still afford the multi-million dollar dealership!! Idiots.

On a side note, in 2004 I bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and paid 2.3% UNDER invoice. That dealership still made money on the deal (and I had no trade in). So don't believe a word the salesman or salesmanager tells you. Do your research before hand and then you'll know who's telling the truth. Good luck. Just last night I was looking at the Highlander Limited and they are gorgeous vehicles. I'd love to call one my own. Unfortunately I'm a State Trooper which means I'm poor so I'll just have to keep dreaming.

You say youre poor and you just bought a limited WK? WK's get well over 40+k with options so you must have some money.

Ours had a sticker over 40k but we got them down to mid 30's then slapped them in the face with rebates that we had. Worked out great.

Never been much on toyotas so I dont have a clue what its like trying to talk them down on one.

You didn't read my post correctly. I said in 2004. That's 4 years ago. Ours was 2wd with the 4.7L. Sticker was $37k but we paid $28k even. Remember, 4 years is a long time. A lot can happen in 4 years - job transfer, having a baby, purchasing first home, etc. We have lived with 1 vehicle since October 2004.

Toyota knows they make a great, long lasting, reliable, quality product and therefore they believe they don't have to negotiate like the domestics do. For many years, it was rare to hear Toyota offer any rebates or special financing like the domestics have done forever.
