    Re: Detailing in 1998

Oh yeah, just remembered : I used a chamois to dry the car. A high quality one. My dad still uses it.

Hmm in 1998 I was in 3rd grade I think. We didn't have a single car back then so I can't really tell how it was but when we did get one in 2002 we used old rags to dry the mini van and some old sponges to wash it.

TW Zip wash was what I used also, a cheap sponge to wash with and an old chamois to dry with. I applied wax with a piece of an old sponge and removed it with some old T-shirt, towel or any old piece of fabric.
I vacuumed the interior quite often, and applied some greasy stuff on the dash, well I thought it looked great back then

Now, can you imagine what washing a car was like in 1968 !

Remember the fuzzy toilet seat top covers? That was our wash mitt and an old bath towel was used to dry the car. You were high class if you had a chamois to dry the car. We used some type of powder car wash made by Dupont. A "T" shirt was used to apply and remove the Simonize. OUCH!

Those were not the "good ole days" when it came to automotive paint care.

If only we knew then what we know now about Meguiars !

My dad mentions using a group of products called "the Treatment" on his 1976 Vette at the time.

I remember using old socks for waxing. Worked great, just wear it like a glove. Waxing in the full sun and wondering why it was so hard to remove. I remember leaving it on too long once (think mom called me in for lunch) and having to use the hose and wash it again to get it off.

                    Re: Detailing in 1998

Well, since I’m such a nut job and so picky (what my family says anyway) when it comes to car care and maintenance..... I just looked up what I did back in 98 on the only vehicle I still have from then.... my 97 Chevy Truck.

                    OK,
On 01/17/98 I waxed with Zymol, tires and trim with Black Magic (silicone based, I think), Armor All for the interior. Didn’t note what soap I used but, I believe it was some Eagle One soap. I do know I used a lambs wool mitt back then and a cloth diaper for removing wax. It was 61 degrees that day, if you were interested.

On 04/19/98 everything else was the same except I used Eagle One Wet for wax.

On 06/13/98 I used Eagle One Carnauba Cleaner Wax (funny, I still have some of that left in my cabinet) and Eagle One Wet wax, everything else was the same.

On 07/19/98 I waxed again with Eagle One Wet, not sure why so soon. Should keep better records.

On 11/22/98 again with Eagle One Wet.

I’m sure there were a lot of washes and such along the way but I think you get the 1998 picture.

I used whatever was available at that time. Dish detergent soap and whatever rags or towels that were laying around. Ironically I did wax using Meguiars cleaner wax but I never paid any attention to scratches or swirls. I am sure if I could look back and remember how I cared for a car I would be astonished and appalled.

We had a meguiars distributor off of Preson Highway in Louisville and someone showed me #7 followed by #16, that was the combination I ended up using for years. Everything was done by hand and I remember thinking how much work it was, and still is!

Wow! Rain Dance...Is that stuff still around? I remember my Dad having a tin of Rain Dance, I think it was the first wax I ever used (80's). It didn't do a horrible job as I recall...

I thought it looked good with Rain Dance, I thought it was a decent wax, I never look for it, so I'm not sure if its still around or not. I just remember the jaw dropping results and the comments I would get from #7 followed by #16 on single stage paint.

1998 hmm... I got my first mountain bike that year. I remember waxing it with Gold Class and an old beater. Those were the good old days.

Last time I checked, Rain Dance is still around.

1998? I was using Meg's #2, #9, followed by #16 wax, using foam pads on my rotary and terrycloth bonnets on my GEM orbital.

                              1988? Same thing!
