  • Sell my truck or not?

I own a 2004 Ford Ranger Tremor, black in color a 3L 2wd, I love the truck, it looks awesome when its all cleaned up, and has a great factory stereo, its an extended cab, so I can slide the seats all the way back and stretch my legs for them long trips, (plus it only has 70.000 miles) My only beef with the truck is the the 2wd part of it, I live in the "boonies" and the 4wd would come in real handy alot of times, this is where my opportunity comes in, my brother is selling his 93 Ford f150 flareside 5.8l 4x4, this truck is IMMACULANT (hope I spelled it right) new paint a couple years ago, new box due to damage, and new fenders due to the owners anal upkeep, it runs like new and has been taken care of like it was a ferrari (by my brother) He now wants to sell it and I have always liked the truck and its a 4x4, which would come in handy for pulling etc, and he only wants 6K for it, now my dilemma is, do I go for the worse gas milage and cost of buddy painting it black for me (I have a black obsession) and sell my little ranger for about 14k? I am really pulled between these 2, I love my ranger but wish it had 4x4, and I really love the style of the 93 flareside, and its v8 pulling power...... PS I drive a company truck so I would only be using this truck when I needed it, I know only I can make this decision, and my loving wife doesnt care what I do, she likes the flareside as well as my ranger. I just need and outside opinion

Well, I can tell you the 5.8 will probably use somewhere around double-triple that of the Ranger, and it will take more gas too. The best I have been able to do in my truck is about 13 MPG. I would ultimately have to say that it depends if the offset of gas will make the 4WD worth it to you.

I think if you just spent a little money on the 2WD system (I'm not sure what the needs are for though), you may be better off.

OOOO...the Tremor has an amazing stereo system for factory, a friend of mine has one. What I would suggest to to keep the Tremor and put some money into that. He has a Rancho Lift and BF Goodrich tires and it does pretty well in the mud. You could probably get a differential with low gearing to give you that torque in the low RPM ranges or you could get a locking one.

Ford Tremor, nice truck, nice system ...Anyways, 4x4 doesn't mean invincible. Since you live in the middle of nowwhere, I could see you needing 4wd. Ever thought about looking for a Ranger 4x4... same great gas milage ..?

It seems like gas milage and the whole 4x4 issue are important issues. I probably lean toward the 2004, just because if you are looking for that random part that breaks it will probably be easier to find than a 1993. That's the first thing that comes to my mind and is also another item of consideration. With this theory I say keep the '04.

thanks for your input, I decided to keep my ranger, with the price of fuel skyrocketing, its low miles, and I have survived this long without needing 4x4, I should be able to live without it, And I plainly just enjoy the ranger too much to get rid of her.
