From the Infinity GX35 promo material:

"Another new technology is what Infiniti calls Scratch Shield paint, which is a self-healing clearcoat that can automatically smooth out light scratches and swirl marks. It' claimed to maintain its gloss over the life of the vehicle."

At the local autoshow, the rep was saying that once the car is in the sun it repairs itself or (and I found this interesting) you can use a hair dryer...so it must have something to do with heat ??...

Interesting stuff.

We heard it's kind of like a rubbery paint.

The question is... how well can it be cleaned and polished the way normal paints are cleaned and polished should a person want to or need to remove swirls and doesn't want to wait for the paint to heal itself.

Interesting idea... car enthusiasts want to be able to work on their car, so if it's some kind of coating that can't be worked on by the average person with normal available detailing tools then it might be a good thing for Joe Consumer, but not the hardcore enthusiasts.

Have to wait and see...

I have heard about but I don't know an awful lot about this new technology. It "heals itself".

I too worry it will disable my abilities to correct the paint - either that or cause me to buy expensive products or tools.

I agree it sounds like it would be very hard to work the paint. It sounds like once applied "let the force be with you." lol Seriously I wonder how is its workability?

I can't be 100% sure about this but I will add it anyways and you can take what you want from it.

A family friend in Arizona has one of the 2008 G35 Sedans and I was asked to detail it. Its black and in Arizona, so I figured it would be a swirled out mess. He has the local place wash it once a week at the very least since he bought it and there wasn't a single defect on the entire car (swirls, scratch, etc.).

This is where your mind comes into play along with mine. It could have been that it was so new or it could have been the new clear coat technology. I have no clue what to believe. I have heard of this clear coat before and like Mike said, its a rubbery property in it that allows it to almost "expand and shrink" to hide the defects.

My friends dad owns a body shop, and I my friend mentioned recently that there was a new type of paint coming out that in his words healed itself from rock dings and what not. He said they have had a chance to work with it a little and said it actually buffed up easier then standard paint. I'm not sure if this is the type referred to in this thread, but it sure sounds like it.

Once I had a car with spray-on clear bra type of protection on front half, when you touch paint you can feel rubbery surface, but it did look semi-decent.
If you don't touch, you won't be able to tell.
You really can't do anything(didn't have clue)...just mist w/QD, detail half of car.

I've heard % read about this type of clear coat but have not had a hands on w/it yet. IMHO anything marketed by a car dealer regarding paint protection that lasts forever usually doesn't. Dealership marketing = Road Apples!
