  • Put your thinking cap on--- an oldie

This is a really old one...Let's see if you still
    remember the solution

3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID
THE ROOM WAS $30, SO EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE
    ROOM.

A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE
ROOM WAS ONLY $25, SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3
    GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.

ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO
SPLIT $5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A
$1 BILL AND KEPT THE OTHER $2 FOR HIMSELF.

THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM,
WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY
KEPT AND THAT MAKES A TOTAL OF $29.

    WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

    Actually, each man paid $8.33 for the room. $8.33 x 3=25.00 25+3+2=30
    Black......the ONLY color!

Not really. If each man gave $10 up front and was refunded $1, then each paid $9.

This is an example of why you don't mix income with expenditures. If you look at the money a different way it works out: $30 was given for a $25 room and $5 change was made, but the change wasn't split evenly among the three guests since the bellboy kept $2. Hotel $25 + bellboy $2 + (3 guests x $1) = $30.

It's sort of like if you deduct 1/3 off 150 you're left with 100, but to get back to 150 you don't add 1/3 back on, you add 1/2.

The bellboy got a can of coke from the vending machine on the way to the room?
