  • Waxes used at Barrit -Jackson

I've been watching the Barrit -Jackson auction, and must admit, those cars have a shine like no other...
Does Meguiar's play a role in the shine..?
I heard they use another brand, any info is welcome....

I'm wondering that, too. I did notice that the wipe down some cars as they roll onto the block, with a red bottle that sure looks like Quick Detailer.

I remember Mike Phillips saying that when he was on stage a couple of years ago (or was that just last year???) that up close many of the cars actually were badly swirled. You can easily "trick" the camera and not show defects with the right light, just as you can highlight defects with the proper lighting.

As for who uses what wax, I would guess that since there are well over 1,000 vehicles up for auction with an almost similar number of consignors, that the prep is as widely diverse as the vehicles are.

Yeah, I totally agree with Mike.

Many of the vehicles there are REALLY swirled up. Even most of the recent rebuilds have holograms.

The secret is in the lighting - plain and simple.

I watched an episode Saturday and a lot of cars I saw were swirled bad, good camera angles and it was dark really in a lot of shot. But when they did upper shots under direct light, they were swirled.

I showed my wife and she said yep. LOL.

Yup, some were and others weren't, but with that huge NXT Tech Wax ad outside I the hope non-Megers convert to the light, and I'll bet those with a glossy, soaking wet finish saluted that ad on the way in

Re: Waxes used at Barrit -Jackson

As someone who has been there (2 years ago), what you are seeing thru the camera lens is true.

It amazed me that people who own the caliber of cars that are going thru Barrett-Jackson, couldn't present their vehicles any better. Maybe they have no control once the vehicle is handed over to B-J.

Now that being said, I do not know what the prep process is for the cars prior to sale. Maybe the Barrett-Jackson people employ others (other than the owners) to wipe down the vehicles prior to them coming across the stage. It probably would be safe to say that a clean cloth is not being used only once per vehicle. Pity the 3rd, 4th and 5th plus vehicles.

When I was there 2 years ago, it was very dry and windy. Therefore there was a coating of dust on all the vehicles. Those of us that read this forum know that the only proper way to remove that much dust would be to rinse and wash. What I saw was dusters and quick detailer type products being used to remove the dust. That would explain all of the swirls that you guys are
              seeing.

I can tell that there was a huge Meguiar's display there though!

Re: Waxes used at Barrit -Jackson

A few years ago we worked at the Barret-Jackson show and here's some threads we posted...

This first one has some photos and comments about the swirls in the cars at the auction. What you see on TV is far from what you see in person.

                    Friday at Barrett-Jackson!

                    Tour of the Barrett-Jackson Auction

                    1953 Buick Skylark - Barrett-Jackson Auction Results

                    Live from Barrett-Jackson!

For a couple days we sneaked up on the auction block and photographed the cars and inspected the paint and the vast majority of the cars going over the blocks, even though they look great when you're watching the show on tv, in person they were swirled out messes.

It's really not about the wax but about the prep work to remove swirls in the first place. It really was surprising how swirled out the finishes were on all these cool cars even after all these years we shouldn't have been surprised. A lot of people can 'buy' a cool car, but that doesn't mean they know how to 'work' on their car and if they don't hire someone that knows how to polish paint the right way then all they get is shiny swirls when they get it back from their choice of detailer.

Polishing paint is an art form that takes time and what we call knowledge of the 3 P's, you need to know a little bit about,

                    Paint
                    Products
                    Procedures

Our guys definitely know what they're doing, guys like Mike Pennington and his team of people know how to create true show car finishes on any kind of paint, but we don't get asked to work on all the cars at Barrett-Jackson and even if we were asked to work on all of them there wouldn't be enough time to undo all the damage caused by hack detailers and body shops that have worked on all these cars previous to bringing them to the auction. Removing swirls takes time.

Anyway... nuff said... too bad we couldn't get the owners of these cars to one of our Saturday classes, that way they would,

                    A. Know how to do it right the first time themselves
                    B. Know how to hire a detailer that knows how to do it right the first time

                    Education is the key...

BTW I noticed a bottle of spray detailer in the hand of a car wiper @ B-J. The bottle was red & the first letter of the product was an "M" but the 2nd letter was not an "e".

If the person you saw was a Barrett-Jackson employee I guess I take issue with that since Meguiar's is an official sponsor of the event. If the person in question was associated with the consignor of the vehicle then they can, of course, use whatever they want on their car. I wonder how much more the car would hammer down for after a good wipe down with UQD?????
