  • Car damaged

Today we are under serious winds : 55-60 MPH and it's been like that for a few hours. I was happy I had my winter vehicle, it's heavier than my summer one.

But tonight, I got a call : the shelter where I stored my car got blown away and damaged the car. I couldn't wait to see it, even if it was a disaster I HAD to know, so I drove there.

It's night and I can only inspect with a flashlight. The car got incredibly dirty by the wind.

It can easily be seen that the front bumper is to be repainted. No apparent dent or broken window. For the rest, I'll have to wash and inspect it.

It's not that this car is a piece of collection or something like that, but it's mine and not even entirely paid for. Oh well, aesthetic damage on a car is not that bad compared to other things that can happen in life, but it's still a major PITA.

        Re: Car damaged

It a temporary shelter at my parents' house. It was bolted down to plywoods on which the car was sitting, strapped over to steel rods pushed down about 1' in the ground, angled 45 degrees. The front and back entrances were reinforced with wood poles stuck in the ground to avoid wind tearing it and concrete bricks were put on the shelter covers's sides to avoid it flapping.

The shelter cover and frame are nowhere to be seen in the night, the wood poles have disappeared except one which laid broken in two about 20' from the car. I hope it didn't break ON the car. I found a single steel rod. I had to retreat, the damage is done and the wind is still very strong, almost blew my truck door out.

I am insured, but depending on the damage, I may not claim it.

The car can't move from where it is right now because we've had some unusual high temps melting the snow and there is about 4" of mud everywhere. My little truck was able to get there, but the car sure won't be able to move if it leaves the plywoods.

The car is a simple Toyota Echo hatchback which I bought new in 2005.

Perhaps this weekend I'll borrow my brother's ATV and seek for the cover and frame. The way the wind was blowing there is a field as far as you can see then a forest. It probably stopped there. It may not be useful anymore, but I'll take it away if I can find it. I imagine the farmer next spring wondering what the hell that thing is if I don't find it.

the shelter got airborne, and was probably responsible for UFO sightings.

on a serious side, I am sorry to hear that. If you a chance, get some pics on the blog.

Yea, sorry to hear that dude. Sounds like it was some fairly rough winds if it tore that thing apart and carried it that far away. Ive never been in winds like that.

Sorry to hear about the damage. Hope it will not be that expensive to fix and the damage is kept at a minimum. Good luck.

                  Re: Car damaged

I've been able to move the car since the temps have lowered, allowing the ground to freeze and allow passage.

Here's what the car looked like, apply this windshield shot to the rest of the car and you can guess all the dirt the wind threw on the car once the the shelter was blown away.

You can see there is a big scratch in the windshield. Once washed, the scratch looks less scary, but it's right in my face when I sit to drive

Here's a shot at the front bumper, where the wood pole first hit

Also hit the bug shield, which saved the hood

And finally, something hit the bumper's side

I've been able to reduce the scratches on the bumper and bug shield, but the bumper will have to be repainted as the scars are too deep.

The bug shield and front grille I can replace for quite cheap, but the windshield bugs me. Do you guys know if such a thing can be repaired by a specialized company or if I will have to replace it too? It's Sunday, so they are all closed here.

Overall, I think I've been quite lucky to have no dent and no broken window.
BTW, the shelter has been found in the field. The frame is all torn and unusable anymore. Amazing.

I think you need to have a professional look at the window in person. They can tell you if its able to be fixed or if you need a new one. You should also check with your insurance company to see if they will pay for a new window.
