  • Has The Drought Prevented You From Washing Your Vehicle?

We're no where near as bad off as Atlanta, GA is, but car washing has been banned in my area...But you can still waste thousands of gallons of the stuff to water lawns with.

    Give me a break!

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Wow...that really doesn't make any sense...

Could you have a sprinkler from your lawn aimed at your car so you could rinse it off?

Fortunately, we haven't had those restrictions. The amount of precipitation during the month of December is close to our total rainfall, though.

Next time you water your lawn, park your vehicle on the lawn. Oops , I will have to dry it now. lol

Re: Has The Drought Prevented You From Washing Your Vehicle?

I live in the Atlanta area. The water restrictions here are nuts but needed because the two main lakes in the area are almost gone. Wish I had a pic to share and will try to get one this weekend.

As for washing the car, not a chance of that happening now. We can't use any water outside the basic needs (drinking, bathing and laundry)

Needless to say, got a simple, hopefully temporary, solution to keeping the car clean on a daily basis:
            1: Body Duster
2: UQD or Last Touch with a Supreme Shine
            3: Quik Wheel Cleaner
4: Once a week use M40 on wheel wells and tires.

Seems to work and if you have an abundent supply of microfibers like I do, you can get away with washing them once per month.

Here in my part of Tampa we've been on water restrictions since spring. We can only wash cars 1 day a week and water our lawns 1 day a week. It hasn't affected my schedule too much but I am more aware of not wasting water when I wash the car.

It has changed the way I wash, I have to haul my buckets up to the coin-op. I am on a private well, so it is conservation on my part to ensure we have water. On the up side the nearest coin-op just installed all new equipment and takes debit and credit cards in the bay.
I read a article from the Wall Street Journal about some towns considering banning at home car washing from an environmental standpoint.

I agree, that watering lawns and landscaping is a waste. I understand that it is a large investment for some. However, I choose having water to bathe, cook and wash clothes over a green lawn any day

I have been waiting for awhile to hear something like that. Being able to use debit/credit cards would make it so much easier.

Re: Has The Drought Prevented You From Washing Your Vehicle?

My water district has a type of ration system where they allow you a certain amount per year but the rates escalate rapidly for any amount over the basic alotment. At present, I use about 1/2 my ration....largely due to upgrading most appliances and bathroom facilities. Next year I plan on ditching the 1000 sq ft of rear lawn and putting down an artificial turf system. I'd like to do the front as well but the HOA won't allow it (go figure).....besides that, I'd hate to have my neighbor running his mower over my fake grass since it runs about six bucks a foot.

Still able to wash the car when I want but I can see that changing. Hopefully they'll just cut the base ration and not resort to having the water police citing me for the little water I'd use on the car. I've got a neighbor that never washes his car, but with the same size lot, house and family size manages to have a water bill 4 1/2 times mine......likes to water his yard in the rain kind of guy.

On a more serious note. I was just kidding in my previous post.In my neck of the woods, (just North of Tampa) it seems like we have had restrictions forever, regarding water..
I was reading a article in todays paper commenting on how in the opinion of some people that Georgia does not have a comprehensive land use policy. The article went on to say that they have allowed to much sprawl around Atlanta without given thought on how to supply the residents needs.

Then the article went on to say the thinking is wrong to limit the flow of the river for thier peoples needs and not worry about the people farther downstream.

My opinion is its to late to try a blame game. The bottom line is a short term fix is not the answer. We need to come up with long term permanent answers to these persistant water shortages thru out the Southeast.

I'm thru on this. Just passing along what I read this morning.

I live about 45 minutes south of Atlanta and am hating not being able to clean my car. We just moved to a place that has a well along with city water, so I'll be able to wash now without being harassed by the water police, but I will still have to be careful about my water use. I wish i could pay $10 to wash my car at home instead of paying $5 and the gas to use a coin op. I guess i have to invest in some ONR.

I would just use a professional waterless carwash.

Well here in South Australia we're experiencing Level 3 of 6 water restrictions. This is an extract from SA Water advising what we can do..

"Water must not be used to wash a vehicle except by means of a commercial car wash that recycles at least 70% of the water, or a bucket filled directly from a tap.
Hoses are not to be used"

So that basically means I'm using a professional waterless wash at the moment and doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon.

Haven't tried this yet, still have some other left, but I'll let you guys know what it's like as a waterless wash once I try it. It's also available in a 20litre bottle.

The Best Last Step, is the step backwards you take to admire your work!

                              That sounds OK to me.

I'd be real happy to be allowed to wash my car once a week.
