  • Went to the DYNO

    Hey everyone,

Just had a great and informative trip to the dyno.

Oh car is a Grand Prix GTP, not too many mods. Just a 3.6" supercharger pulley, headers, borla catback and a little pcm tweaks.

I made decent power for how pig rich i am running. Also, dyno operator had my car at i think at least way too high a speed, but i will be going back to check that out and im going to lean my car out a bit.

Here i the chart of the three pulls

    Max Power: 223whp
    Max Torque: 256whp

Anyone have any dyno experience want to chime in?

    Re: Went to the DYNO

It seems any factory forced induction car is made to run pig rich - the manufacturers can't afford to have 'em blowing up all the time!!

I see you did your pulls in pretty cool weather, which certainly helps your numbers. When I dyno'd my 2004 PT Cruiser turbo I had done nothing but the Mopar Stage 1 chip, it was just over 100 degrees out, and I still managed 205HP and 210lb-ft. Since then I've added a set of hard pipes to the turbo plumbing, the composite intake from the 2006 and up PT (supposed to give an additional 8HP from the factory) and a dual stage boost controller where the second level is controlled from inside the cabin.

Have you taken your car to the track yet so you know what it will run in the 1/4 mile? I haven't run since installing the boost controller, but my current best time is a 14.48 @ 94.25mph whereas a stock PT turbo is more like 15.3 And again, with the weather here in SoCal, that run was done under 95 degree heat and some pretty stiff headwinds.

no that is not factory fueling i changed it with the powertuner.

and it appears i went quite a bit rich. thats the problem when your tunning using narrow-band and not wideband. (too expensive right now)

yes i took it to the track when i was stock and ran a 14.3 at 97mph.

That was full weight, full tank of gas, spare and jack in the trunk.

Since then i have added quite a bit so a track time wouldn't be very accurate

thats is pretty nice numbers for a PT have you been back to the track after your mods?

Nice numbers and you oughta be able to gain another 10 horse or so leaning that out. I put down 221 hp and 186 ft. lbs. in my cobalt SS/SC with just a honed exhaust manifold. I still have to put my intake back on (took it off for winter), and I have put a cat-back exhaust on since then and I have a Stage II kit sitting in my room awaiting installation and ill be going back. After that ill be ordering HP Tuners and cleaning up my A/F ratios since my A/F currently looks worse that yours!!!! I dropped below 10 off the charts for a good 1000 rpm's!!!

Hows you tranny like those numbers ?

Not since adding the dual stage boost controller, no.

See, all you guys back East run so much faster than we do here in California. We've got guys on the PT forum I hang out at that are running high 13s with the mods I have on my car and none of us out here can get that quick. But then track prep at California Dragway is almost non existent, it's always hotter than heck (we've had race days with 115 degree temps!!), and the headwinds are more useful for sailing than drag racing!!

I don't have any plans for doing anything more power-wise to my car, at least not for the foreseeable future (I am toying with the idea of boosting my Miata though ), but I know guys who have swapped out the turbo and are running more fuel with different management software and are turning dyno numbers in excess of 425HP and clocking high 12s in the 1/4 mile. No spray, just a big turbo conversion on daily drivers. Nobody expects this out of a PT, but we're running the exact same engine as the SRT-4 guys, and this motor is unbelievably stout.

Not exactly sure what type of Grand Prix you have, but if I remember correctly the 97-03 GTPs should be making about 240hp stock on the supercharged 3.8L V6. I have an '01 Grand Prix GT and it should be getting 200hp stock on the non sc 3.8L V6. With the mods I would expect it to be a bit more, unless it is maybe an older GTP. Either way, I'm curious.

Aren't those the manufacturer's published numbers? Wouldn't those be at the crank while jashgtp's dyno numbers are obviously at the wheels. Take auto trans parasitic losses into account and there you go.

I know they had a heck of a time getting numbers on my car because they wanted to do the pulls in third gear but couldn't keep the thing from downshifting so they ended taking all the pulls in second. I know the Mopar Stage 1 kit is good for 240HP and 265lb-ft of torque so while I was a bit disappointed in my dyno numbers I take solace in turning faster ETs than guys who dyno'd higher than I did.

                Re: Went to the DYNO

DYNO numbers are basically a joke. I just went basically to get a baseline before i do more radical mods, so i can compare them and see how much I increased (aka cam/intercooler)

Mike hit it on the head.

Yeah Gm claims the l67 makes 240 but thats a joke, most gtps have 4-8 degrees of knock with stock, each degree of knock equates to ~6HP

A dyno which measures WHP not crank horsepower. I should be close to 300 at the crank though. So your not making 200 to the ground BTW!

Plus, i have seen numbers stating that oh trannys take as much as 25% drivetrain loss!!!

You just gotta respect a guy who tells it like it is!!! Yes, comparing dyno sheets for different cars, run on different dynos, run by different technicians under different atmospheric conditions is like comparing elephants to chain saws. But using the same dyno, technician, atmospheric conditions etc to compare before/after mods on the same car - well, that has some merit.

One of the tuner magazines did a dyno comparison test a couple of years ago. They took the same vehicle to half a dozen different dynos on the same day and got a maximum spread of 58HP from the lowest to highest readings. Mind you, SAME vehicle, NO modifications, just DIFFERENT dynos. 58HP difference!!!! Pretty telling.

mike have you every iced your intake down? put some turbo blue or the like in your tank when almost empty?(the reason i said turbo blue if you have it around your area is that you will pick up a couple tenths and it don't miss with your o2 sensors, also don't know about your PT but have bumped your timing any(can't remember though did you say you had some computer treeking done) and what about drag radials? if none have these i'd say there's your 13's on a good day with low humidity! O ya also the most important thing you need to have that great shine i've seen you put on it.

Drag radials, yes but everything else, no. The drag radials are a must because on my street tires (225/45-17 BFGoodrich KDW2s) I can easily break the front tires loose from a 20mph roll with two people in the car. And that's on the first boost stage before I flip the switch on the dash!!!
