  • Internet Explorer 7 Experts PLEASE!

OK, not sure where this all started but I have IE7 is installed on a Windows XP computer and.... it was working totally fine, then all the sudden I couldn't download anything you click on ANY link to download something and it would do NOTING!

Here is what I have done so far:
Attempt One: So I tried to uninstall IE7 as directed on the Microsoft web site at the end of the uninstall it said I was missing something and I needed to locate the 'Windows NT Service Pack Uninstall Directory' no matter what I do I can not get around this 'problem'.

Attempt Two: I tried to restore to a prior day when I knew IE7 was NOT on my computer. Thats when it went way downhill, its hard to explain seems everything on IE no longer functions properly. You can use it if you know the exact website but there is no menu bar, no favorites, at the very top of the window where you see the title of the web site is suppose to display is blank, can not search from the address bar, when you click Start > Control Panel > Internet Options NOTHING happens! Thats the short list of what it won't do.

Attempt Two: I tried to restore back to the current restore point and IE is still all messed up!?!?

I have looked high and low, called Microsoft but they wanted to charge me to diagnose the problem. I have ran a virus scan (its up to date) and nothing comes up!?!? Anyone have any ideas or can point me to a web site to ask the proper people? I have been messing with this for about a month, I really don't want to completely restore the computer as it is totally loaded and everything else it working properly and I can't believe there isn't a way to fix this.

    Anyone?

Firefox is okay, but I prefer Opera by far. Opera is much easier and organized than IE7. Plus, the tab browsing is very efficient and the download manager tracks your downloads (helps to find where you put things). I have yet to have a problem or mysterious error with Opera.

If you must have IE7 or need more help, post your topic on Tweaktown. I've been a member for year and the help is great.

          Here are some screenshots:

The second shows the toolbar when you click on the address. It is very helpful when you want to go back to your homepage and the top 10 list is nice.

You can save and expand these images because they are actually fairly large.

I find that Firefox takes a while until you fully adjust all the settings. For example, the download manager automatically puts the file in a mysterious folder. Opera puts it in a folder of your choice. The 'Transfers' tab is really nice to manage your files. Opera is a true download, install, and play program. I can't tell enough how much better it is than Firefox.

          Here is the 'Transfers' tab:

            I forgot to mention this:

Opera will save your last page and tabs if you exit out of Opera. This helps a bunch if you accidentally close out.

If your computer does shut down for some reason (power outage), Opera gives you the option of starting from your last viewing page, home page, or a blank page.

Man all these replies!?!? What no one likes IE? I am going to keep the Tweaktown link handy.

OK, I was just on the phone with Microsoft for about an hour and 15 min... I guess if you push the correct buttons on their teleprompts you get 'free' installation and removal help on IE7 - well removal here I come. It did take some time and about a dozen different ways, run this run that, installed foxfire, regedit this and that, install this and remove that... but the guy finally helped me remove the diseased IE7! Whew, I was starting to loose sleep over it!

The biggest problem was trying to understand the guy who spoke poor English at best, if I wasn't 'computer savvy' (programming degree) and couldn't piece together the few words I could understand I would have been lost, not sure how the average computer user would have gotten any helpful information out of that call!?!? I guess it doesn't matter it worked for me.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Experts PLEASE!

I tried to figure out how to connect to the wireless DSL network on my new laptop recently, and since I'm "technologically impaired", I called Bellsouth (or rather AT&T now...I'd better not get started on that though). I had the same problem you did, gb387. I'm not computer savvy, though, so after talking for at least 45 minutes and it still not working, he said he would overnight me a CD and I should call back tomorrow when I got the CD (or at least that's what I thought he said!). I never got the CD (that was about two weeks ago), so now I'm trying to work up the nerve to call again and waste my time talking to someone that doesn't speak English well (waste their time too, for that matter) so they can attempt to tell me how to connect to the internet.

                I'm glad it's worked out, gb387!

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Experts PLEASE!

I don't necessarily really dislike IE. In fact, I use it on some of the other computers I use (everybody is so used to using IE).

I find that IE7 is anoying. It seems cluttered and disorganized compared to IE6. I prefer IE6 to IE7.

The reason I switched to Opera was that IE was really slow to load - small pages, like google, would take 45 seconds or more to load. I also didn't like the layout of IE7 - I accidentally updated. I was also tired of all the 'security threats' and other plagues. IE is so overly complicated. Firefox started over and took the benefits of IE and simplified it and removed the 'back doors.' Opera took the benefits of Firefox and IE7 and packaged it.

Now service is a totally different topic...

Microsoft service is obsolete and it requires a lot from you. For example, you have to call up and register each copy of XP. XP has quite a few problems that all require a full reinstall. Vista is already showing some major flaws. I wish someone would do what Firefox did and make a simplified and more efficient setup that doesn't have any back doors and doesn't require constant 'updates.'

very interesting information. Will have to do alot of research on this. I am contemplating a switch. This may just be the push off the bridge I needed. Thanks everyone.
