  • How Many Cars For Sale???

How many vehicles are for sale on any given day in your area that are offered for sale by private parties??

I would say with in a mile of my home there are about 20-25. Most are parked on street corners.

    They seem to be everywhere.

What a great opportunity to let them know that you will help them sell their car (most likely for even more money than they are already asking) by detailing it for them (for a price, of course).

I've noticed most people selling a vehicle don't take the time to perform a complete detail prior to selling. I guess they figure why waste the time if they are getting rid of it. To me it is common sense that a fully detailed vehicle would bring a quicker sale and possibly more money than one that hasn't been washed or even vacuumed out. People these days, they just don't care.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Unfortunately, I have expected this for a while. A lot of folks bought homes on these very creative zero percent interest rates and then lived beyond their means in hopes of selling their homes in five years for very high profits, well we all know that is not happening and now they are faced with loosing their homes, cars, etc. The economy has also changed in the past few years and disposable income is becoming less and less and big corporations are cutting back on the work force. Those of us in Southern California don't seem to see this happen as much as other parts of the US, but it is happening, so make sure to save some pennies for the crunch times and spend some (in moderation) to help the economy.

I think you mean ZERO DOWN or 100% LOAN TO VALUE, or interest only payment loans, not zero percent loans.

The number of used vehicles for sale at any given point in time is a poor indication of the economy in general. You can make a better arguement by looking at new car sales. For all you know, private party used car sales could be comprised of many who want to get more for their cars than a dealer would pay on trade-in.

Yeah, may be all the used cars sold at Barrett-Jackson are a sign of a terrible economy. Do you think Harley E. Cluxton needed the $5 million he got for selling the Super Snake Cobra to make his mortgage payment? By the way, where do you think the $100+ million plus 16 - 18% buyer/seller fees came from if the economy is that bad?

Well, you can't argue with the fact that home prices are falling, albeit not by a huge margin, in many parts of the country. At the very least they aren't skyrocketing like they had been over the past 6 years. Case in point: our old neighborhood in Orange, CA (we moved to south county back in October) saw the average selling price of a home go from $250,000 in 2000 to $695,000 in late 2005 and not much above that in the past year. In 2003 to 2005 homes were selling in a matter of days, now it's a matter of months - 6 months or more. Or in my mom's area, Southeastern Michigan, more than a year in some cases and that's in very nice neighborhoods too. And there are waaaay too many people who got into variable rate mortgages 5 years ago that were structured such that their mortgage payments are due for huge increases in the next year or so. I have several clients who are mortgage brokers and they are readying the next round of products to sell to these people - people who can barely afford their $2500/month note, let alone the $3200 or more it will soon become.

As for guys dropping millions of dollars on a car - folks with that sort of disposable income tend to still have it even in an economic downturn. Don't forget, during the Great Depression there were still those who could afford a Duesenberg.

All in all, while there are some signs that the economy is beginning to slow, there are others that indicate otherwise. Things are quite good for my wife and I personally right now, so I'm certainly not complaining.

Not too many around here. Maybe 3 or 4 on my 6 mile ride into work. I do notice that the one place doesnt go more than a few days with out a car for sale.

I brought this question up because it seems like ALLOT of vehicles are for sale in the street by private parties.

I see them getting ticketed, vandalized or towed away. Around here it is illegal to sell your car in the street.

I want to open a fix location detail shop. I am wondering if is a good idea to offer a safe area where people can leave their vehicles for sale.

It would be just like a used car lot but without dealers. All the transactions would be between the seller and buyer. I would either get a % or a fixed fee for displaying the vehicle on my property

There are a few of those around here. "Show and Sell" is the name of one. Seems like a good idea if your location has high visibility. Just be careful not to let just any car get put there. I wouldnt think you would want it distracting from your high end detailing. Might work out too that you could detail the cars for sale, offer that as a higher package then just displaying the cars. Good luck.

I think that's a good idea. We had a guy here who did something similar to that. He bought an open lot at a busy intersection and turned it into a consignment lot, of sorts. He charged a flat rate per car and within a month, there must have been over 100 cars (and boats & RVs) out there.

One of the 20 mile stretches that I drive has 8 cars for sale. They are mostly on peoples front lawns. They are all neglected. About half of them probably have the potential to look really good.

Actually there were some 0 % interest rate loans, but it was 0% for only the first five years, after that they would go to the current rate or an inflated rate. People thought they could make a killing by selling in the first five years.

Sorry to have gotten sidetracked Joe!!

As regards the original topic of this thread: I currently don't see many cars parked along the street with "For Sale" signs in the windows at the moment, but what I have seen many times is a section of a parking lot where a couple of cars will be parked with such signs on them, and a few days later more are parked and the numbers escalate until the local police stop the practice. Eventually a new location for these impromptu car lots springs up, gets shut down, and the cycle repeats.
