if it is his car, just don't wax it. Let him feel like trash for having dull paint!

As mentioned, why wax his car if he tells you not to? You don't have to do the extra work and he gets what he wants... problem solved.

take the car some where else and do a little half and half like STG said. bring it home and apologize and say that you wanted to give him a present but couldn't finish on time but you'll get it done tomorrow. If he's as stubborn as my Dad was, better to ask him how he thinks the vinyl should be treated and do that part his way..... it'll distract him off the paint..........

Re: Just had an arguement with my dad on waxing.
While I agree with the "clearcoat can be waxed" statements, I'm not too sure I'd want to go out and wax a car for someone that *specifically* told me to not touch his car. I mean, yes, I might think I can make it look better, but it is his car. It might create some tension/rage within the person that would overshadow any improvement you might be able to show him.
If you can find some paperwork on proper care of metalic paint, from a source that he'd trust, let him read it. Maybe show him some other clearcoat/metalic cars that have been waxed. Until he agrees to it, I wouldn't try to force it on him by waxing part/all of his car. Just my opimion, though.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement. The thing is he's telling me that its metallic paint & doesn't need any wax....Hehe. I told him there's a clear coat on top of the metallic paint.
Could be worse. He could be like us...and then he'd want you to 5-step it every week or two. If it's a lighter color and he doesn't keep if too long, no problem. Otherwise, he'll eventually come around to your point of view-- if he keeps his eyes open, that will eventually open his mind.TQ.

Clay , Color X and finish off with NXT. You wont believe how good the car will look.

I bought a black car in 1987 that had what was then called a "no wax" finish on it-- nowdays known as clear coat. I kept it for just under 5 years and after about 2 years of not waxing it I discovered that "no wax" was a complete falicy. The car didn't have a scratch on it but it had a lot of spots and etches from acid rain and what have you.
Clear Coat is not "no wax"... and there is no such thing when we're talking cars. You might be able to get away with it on a polyurathane coated floor but that's indoors.

Re: Just had an arguement with my dad on waxing.
I am clueless about the clearcoat situations too. That's why I came to this formula. I am 55 and my dad is 79 and we don't argue about too much anymore, but neither of us knows what to do with the clearcoat. I have a 2004 Kia Optima that I bought new. I originally planned to wax it every year, but being afraid that I would mess it up, it's never been waxed other than the spray on kind at car washes. It still looks terrific, but I've seen other cars with clearcoats where it's peeling and/or the paint is looking awful.
Also even though it still looks great, if you get close enough you can see a few small spots that are actually dried spit that I didn't get off before it set up. I can live with it like it is, but would love to take care of those spots without causing more problem than is already there.
Suggestions?

Some dealerships spew out this type of nonsense. I no longer argue about it. How could I possibly know more about this stuff than a car dealership?
Oh well. You can't save them all.
