  • so I'm washing the car......

It all started when mother asked me to wash her car. She owns a Black 02 Grand Prix GT.

By this time I'm about 2 hours into it and it's getting dark. Do I quit and say I'll do it tommorow!?,,,,,,,,,no! I get my 100 watt worklight and keep at it.

About 15 minutes later, the neighbor stops over says hey,,,,,,np So we talk for alittle and then this is where it starts. He notices the soap I'm using and questions it. He asks why are you using car wash. I told him straight up that car wash soap doesn't strip wax as easily as dishwasing soap would and makes the finish smoother and more reflective than regular dishwashing soap.

Neighbor says to me "oh ok, does it remove grease and oil from the finish? I said "usually most modern car washes have the ability to remove most everyday dirt and grime but not the deep down stuff" He said "so your saying that it's cleaning the car but not 100% I said "car wash is deisgned to remove everyday dirt and contaminents from your car but also leaves a nice shine and leaves the remaining wax on your car" He said "why don't you want to strip wax? I said "because then there is no protection"

By this time I'm starting to get alittle agitated and quickly spray off the car so it doesn't spot and I'm also burning daylight. He said "well I've always used Pamolive on my car and it works great and shines good" I glanced over at it, sure it looked good but that just waxed shine wasn't there.

I said ok I need to finish this up, he said alright, next time you wash the car try out dishwashing soap it really clean your paint. I in a reluctant voice said "ok"

Moral of the story is people who don't understand detailing like we do, some people can come up with pretty crazy ideas for cleaning there vehicle. I just thought I would share this,,,,,deadman98

Just take comfort in the fact that in maybe 2 years, his stripped car will look like **** and yours will be beautiful. Then you can be the one giving the advice.
I sometimes judge people by the cleanliness of their car.

Next time you see the car go up and look at it close, I bet you will be surprised how bad it looks. Clear coats are pretty good at maintaining a 10 footer look.

Then when he tells you about dishwashing soap and the like you will know how bad his truick really looks and it wont bother you, he probably uses pledge for wax.

I've seen people clean their paint with Windex! Needless to say the paint had no wax protection and looked very dull.

Windex at a car dealership today. I saw a guy using windex at a dealership on brand new Lincolns!! Brand new. I asked if they had a detail shop he said yep. Then why aren't the pros out there cleaning up those $40-50 cars your cleaning, using the same dirty rag and windex... Didn't make sense either.

Who the heck has grease and oil on their paint that they need to clean off? I guess if you had a lot of that, you might need to step it up to a stronger cleaner. But if you don't you are using more strength in a product, which makes it less safe, for no good reason. It might even have more environmental impact for no good reason.

I mean, if his only point is dishwashing soap is stronger, then you can't argue that. Bleach is stronger too, and kills germs! Maybe I should use that, otherwise I might get salmonella when I open the door!! Hey, what's stronger than bleach in case the bleach is leaving stuff behind?

How about an acid wash. That will clean it down to the metal
