  • Off-Topic Q's for the Mechanically Inclined

The college guy next door has this 1993 Ford Exlorer 4dr. that has been sitting behind his house. I finally asked him about it today. He said it has been sitting for about a year. It was stolen from him at his dorm, stereo and all were stripped, and then he found it. It wouldn't crank so he's just left it sitting...pushed it from the dorm to next door (couple blocks) when he moved here.

He told me, "I think it's the transmission. I tried jumping it one time and it almost started." It doesn't seem like he's too mechanically inclined or knowledgeable though. I feel like it probably just needs a battery, maybe alternator or starter, and a good tune up.

This would definitely qualify for an Extreme Makeover (I'd kinda like the challenge )...but my question is whether or not to buy it. I would only offer him like $200-250 (He already said he'd take $500, maybe less).

The exterior is not too bad...just oxidized paint. It could use new tires. The inside is pretty bad (needs headliner, broken door panel, etc.), but I could get it back in pretty good shape without too much difficulty.

I know we're only talking around $250 bucks, but I don't want to just throw it down the drain on something better left alone. NADA and KBB list it in fair/poor condition around $1500, good around $2200. I would try to spend around $800 total, maybe $1000, then sell it.

    Any ideas, suggestions, opinions??

Let me guess is it white!? The transmitions are always going out on them. You will need to spend about $1000 - $1500 to get it back in good working order is my estimate. I used to own one.
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.

Been there done that, got the shirt. Skip it. Parked cars are parked because they are TOTAL JUNKERS. People don't let good cars sit, they get them fixed. Chances are it had all kinds of problems before and the transmission was about to go. Check out craigslist or you local city vehicle (as in town owned and fleet maintained) auction if you want to make a few bucks on a fix-er upper.

Thanks guys. It was cold and rainy today with not much to do except brainstorm.

Now that you mention it, I remember a body shop guy once telling me he liked buying wrecked cars to fix and sell at the auction...at least that way he knew they had been running ok.
