  • Grit Gaurd Dolly Alternative

    Hello all,

I have been trying to find an alternative to the Grit Guard Bucket Dolly only because I can't justify buying one for $35. I was at Home Depot today and found this in the garden section. It was $7.93 and has a very sturdy design (it can hold my weight, I stood on it). The only problem that I found was that the casters don't lock, but they are just screwed in, so I will probably replace one with a locking caster.

I think this a great alternative if you don't want to build one yourself.

    Here are the pics,

With a standard 5 gallon bucket on it, fits perfectly

I bought two so I have one for both buckets and plan on connecting them together.

There is also a round one that is $4.93, but it only had 3 wheels and seemed to be unstable.

    Good idea!

But how do you plan on stopping the buckets from sliding off?

Looks like a good alternative.... a sliding bucket would be an easy fix should it become a problem.

I'd try putting a few cleats on the corners at just the right spot to snog the base of the 5-gal buckets.

Harbor Freight carries bucket dollies made out of wire frames, last I saw they have two models, the more expensive one for about $6 works the best. I also saw some at big lots a while back.

I've got a couple of the wire dollies from Big Lots that jezroj referred to. They work fantastically.

Do have any idea which one you got? I got a green wire one with only three wheels and it was very unstable, maybe I got the bad one, lol.

The ones at Big Lots gave me the idea to look at Home Depot.

I do also plan on building a little lip around the edge, like gb387 said.

I found a bigger one with four wheels for $5. Its actually a bit to big for a 5 gallon bucket, it has about an extra 1.5 inches all the way around. I just use that space as a handy place to put my wheel and tire brushes. I'd take a picture and post it but my internet's down at home.

Looks nice. Personally, I don't see the benefit of using a dolly for the buckets. I guess you'll always have to watch out that this dolly goes on the run (in the worst case into you car).
Additionally, I only have a small sized car, so I won't get tired carrying the bucket around the car.

I plan on purchasing some dollies just haven't yet, been looking for just the perfect solution at the right price. I may have to give big lots a shot this week.

For me I use two 5 gallon buckets and it gets old lugging them around the vehicle seems they are always in the wrong place, it would be nice to easily kick them around the vehicle. Now if you have a sloped drive way they may not be the best solution, unless you would like to chase your water buckets out in traffic.

                      Exactly why I got them.

I have done some modifications to it today and will post pics tomorrow.

You could just use some of that none slip matting.

ugh, i hate my sloped driveway

i have a mechanic's chair/stool thing for doing the lower parts of the car, claying and polishing. but its a constant battle to keep the chair in one place. its very frustrating.

thats the thread you were looking for sneek.

I like his a lot but I am to lazy to make it, so the home depot ones are fine.

I was actually thinking of putting some varnish on it, just haven't gotten around to it yet. (just like the pictures of the dolly after modifying it haha)
