  • Car Insurance!

    Hi,
The key to saving money on insurance is to shop around and get as many quotes as possible. This is especially true when purchasing auto insurance. I recently read one article that insurance rates for the exact same coverage can vary several hundred dollars. Consumer activist Clark Howard suggests shopping at least ten insurance companies before purchasing. There are some great resources online to make this process easier.
Get a quote from a broker - brokers provide a good service in that they try to get you a competitive quote and get a small commission in return.

        Re: Car Insurance!

It may be spam, but it's actually good advice. Well, the shopping around part, not necessarily the link he provided. I had been paying "X" for my insurance and had compared different companies online from time to time and was satisfied that I was getting good, competitive rates. But I kept seeing those ads for that insurance company who claims their website shows rates for them and their competitors - yeah, that one, you know it. So a little over a year ago I checked out their site and sure enough, they gave me their price and four others. Now, their price was less than $100 a year more than I was currently paying, but it was still more. Two of the competitive quotes were even more expensive, the third was maybe $125 less, but one of them was not only really cheap, but from a decent company as well. Finding this hard to believe I went straight to that company's website and, sure enough, they quoted me a figure that was fully 1/3 less than what I'd been paying, and with even more coverage!!! Needless to say, I changed immediately.

I'm not naming companies for a few reasons - 1) I don't want this to look like I'm shilling for anyone, 2) you can easily figure out the first company I mention, and, most importantly, 3) just because the company I'm with now was much less expensive for me (married, age 47, wife and I both have perfect driving records, multiple car discount, low mileage use, and our geographic area) doesn't mean it will be cheaper for you.

So yes, shop around from time to time. The Internet makes is sooooo easy.

And please forgive me for turning a worthless, spam infested post into something worthwhile!!!

I am with the first company you mentioned only in my case they were the cheapest with more coverage, I promptly changed insurance companies and couldn't be happier. My old insurance(state farm) calls me once a year to try and get me back but they keep getting farther and farther from the price I am paying now. You are right it pays to shop!

            Re: Car Insurance!

My vehicles are insured by Mercury. I signed up with Mercury over 15 years ago because they were the cheapest. I have paid Mercury over $27,000 over the last 15 years.

I have never made a claim until about four or five months ago. Another person that is also covered by Mercury plowed into my detailing van while my van was legally PARKED.

Long story short Mercury is the worst company I have ever delt with.

It has been over 4 months and I had to pay repairs, rental van, dedutable, etc.. out of my pocket.

I am canceling my policy and I am going with AAA at any cost because I value superior customer service over price.

              Re: Car Insurance!

When your talking to your agent, ask if you get discounts for multi-car/multi-line. I get enough of a discount on my truck, that I am almost getting a $100,000 life insurance policy for nothing. One thing to keep in mind is how they respond to a claim. I have State Farm, have had since I was 16. I have never had any problems with them. I know my agent and his employees personally though(small town life, ain't it great) so it's a smile and how's ya mamma when you walk in. I checked other agencies, and some were cheaper, until I put in that I wanted life insurance and zero deductable on my comprehensive. Once I did that, all the others went through the roof, and State Farm beat their price. I'm not pushing State Farm, I'm just saying I am happy with my service and that is more important to me than price.
