  • Laptop/Docking Station options/opinions....

Looking for suggestions.... I am looking for a Laptop/Docking Station combo. Anyone have one? Any suggestions on a brand? I am quite familiar with computers just never had a lap top or docking station.

Reason for the docking station, I can't stand the keyboard on a laptop. At the same time I want the portability and a quick and easy way to hook it up to a larger monitor, keyboard and mouse.

First I would probably go with the brand of your notebook. That way if anything goes wrong, you don't have 2 companies trying to blame eachother, and you in the middle getting no where. I know targus makes some, there are some other "aftermarket" companies out there. Check out some of the big computer retailers compusa, bestbuy etc. and see what they offer, and what functions catch your eye, then decide from there.

Totally agree with choosing a brand first. Most major laptop manufacturers have docking stations (minus Apple.) Can't remember seeing docking stations at computer retailers, but I don't really look.

I have a Dell and Stinkpad (each with own dock.) The docks have ports for power, serial, parallel, bunch of USB, mouse, keyboard, ethernet, modem, audio jacks, dual VGA outputs, and some other stuff. There are docks that are expandable, but with laptop performance today there is really no need.

I have an IBM X60s with the IBM docking station and I am extremely happy with the combination. The X60s is small and light for traveling and with the docking station I have all the amenities of a larger laptop/desktop when I'm in my office.
