  • Graphing Calculators

    Hi all,

Can anybody recommend a good brand of graphing calculator for a trigonometry & geometry class? Will also be using it for quadrilateral equations, etc. too.

    Thanks!

Most popular one and the one that our school requires is the Texas Instrurments TI-84. It used to be the TI-83 but the 84 is the newer one now.

We always used the TI's in highschool, and I had a TI-89 through college. The other popular brand is HP.

I'd go with a TI one. I had a Casio one and it died during my final exam.

Back in the day when I was in school, I worked for Target in the electronics department. At the start of the school years, we'd go thru cases of TI ones.

Does one really need a graphing calc for trig or geometry? In any case, get an HP 48GX if you can find one.

            I used to have a Ti84 Silver, but it got stolen...so now I have a Ti83+

the only downside to the Ti's is they reset into Radians. Personally I find it harder to think in radians to I use degree.

For my high school the Ti89 is not allowed because it doesn't do a good enough job of round clearing (2nd, "+", 7, <-, 2 ,enter)

                  Re: Graphing Calculators

You can tell I barely used the 89 for "advanced' stuff.. what is round clearing?

And as Bluetooth points out, I never used a calculator for a math class in college....

                    Re: Graphing Calculators

round clearing clears your calc. of all programs and other apps. It can be disabled by a program called MIRAGE.

Looks like a scientific calculator would suffice for that class, but the course calls for one.

                          How times have changed!

Back when I was in high school, calculators were almost nonexistent.

Looks like Texas Instruments gets a lot of votes here.

What about the TI-86? Has anyone used it?

You mean they didnt use the abacus anymore...

I should say I have used the TI's since 7th grade really, when I had pre-algebra, probably have used the 82, 83, 84, 86, 89. But like others mentioned, in any class that required one, it was almost always a fancy adding machine. Only a couple real things were graphed. But maybe it is different for you....
