Advice: New Navigation System

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, my friend directed me to this board and said people would have good advice for me here...

I’ve been working on this new SUV for my wife’s birthday at the end of the month, almost done after a year of agony! I’m just finishing up with the interior and other accessories and wanted to know if anyone had experience w/ in-dash navigation systems? Any suggestions/ideas would be really helpful for me.

I've only used the one in Hertz rental cars before and loved them. It's called Hertz never lost. They are made by Magellen.

I've seen some pretty neat systems from mp3car.com.
Most of them are kits you build yourself, but I think there may be some completed systems also. Fry's sells a panasonic DVD/Navigation for around $1,300.
If you don't really need it to be in-dash, they get much cheaper, $300-$700.

I plan on building my own based on info/links from the mp3car.com site. It takes more work, but you get a system that can hold all your music, watch DVD's, navigation, internet access, and lots of stuff.

great! thank you so much for the welcome and the great feedback. i went out on black friday (!) and did some in-store research at best buy and other retailers and am pretty set on the AVIC-NI system from Pioneer, out of curiousity are the people on this forum who have used that one or know of others with experience?

I have no experience either, though my parents and I have done a little browsing, possibly something they could use in the future.

But an odd question, why would someone want something permanently tethered to your car? Is there any benefit? Just the bigger screen? I mean, no one wants a cell phone hard wired into their car these days...

Its much cleaner looking when its built in, plus on some cars, there is nowhere near the dash to put a portable one. In the windshield, it seems like it would be too distracting/limit your field of view. Of couse, these things are pretty distracting anyway, so in the window may be better (less time looking away from road).

I've seen a hertz car with a never-lost system, mounted on a big stick up from the base of the console. Pretty ugly if you ask me.

That's the exact in-dash I was going to recommend.
