  • Windshield repair vs. replacement

Picked up a rock chip in the windshield on my new 2007 Hemi at 330 miles. Stuff happens, right? I have full coverage insurance on glass -- no deductible.

If the chip can be repaired with epoxy I might just do that. I'd really rather not have the windshield replaced. I get sort of nervous when the techs start to pop out the old one. Besides that winter is coming and around here they use sand and gravel on the ice. Chips really happen during our winter months.

About epoxy repairs. I've had good luck with them in the past . Anyone have anything to say about this process?

Regardless of the action I take, it will be done by a darn reputable shop.

I have had my windshields repaired several times, luckily not on my current truck yet. Never had a problem most of the time you can't even tell where the repair was done. Get'er fixed and call it good.

      gb387,

They use sand and gravel on icy highways around Des Moines too. Chips happen, don't they?

If you do get it replaced, just make sure they use the same kind of molding as the other windows. On my Grand Prix, I had the front replaced and they used some cheap stuff that now turns my towels and applicator pads black when I touch the trim, while the rest of the trim is nice, shiney and if you get wax on it, just wipes right off.

Another caution on replacements. Many insurance companies will direct you to an aftermaket glass replacement. These aftermarket windshields are not a s strong as OEM. This could be dangerous to both you and your passengers. If your replace the windshield demand and OEM windshield.

I went to a very reputable shop recommended by my body shop, the Dodge dealer and my insurance company. It's a local shop that will put in OEM MOPAR glass. We tried the epoxy repair. If the truck were my 2003 Dodge I would have been OK with the repair, but the 2007 has barely over 1000 miles on it. The new windshield will be put in on Thursday. They will do it inside in their shop, use two techs to install it and make sure that it is done right. I think the shop owner realizes that I am sort of fussy. Oh, there was no charge on the repair attempt.

I feel sort of picky having the new windshield installed but I pay extra for full coverage on glass. I have paid this extra amount for over 30 years. I guess that it is OK to submit a "picky" claim ever once in a while.

Well, you bought a new truck and you should be driving a new truck. I am very picky as well, in all honesty if it were me I would be a little up set and may not be totally satisfied with just a repair on a vehicle that new. Now, if its a couple years old chances are the windshield isn't in prime condition anyway, I would be fine with a repair and I have had them done with success several times. I like your idea, an attempt to fix is good, and if its not fixed to your satisfaction by all means get a new windshield, its a new truck!
