    Re: A new Chevrolet

I'd guess, judging by the small sign, that it's an Opel rebadged as a Chevy.

              Chevrolet WTCC Ultima Concept
Forget the Camaro -- This is Chevrolet's ultimate concept car!
              by Justin Kaehler

September 28, 2006 - We never thought we'd say this, but Chevrolet has actually built a car that we absolutely love. Of course, it's a concept. And it's based on a race-spec version of a car that will only be available in Europe. So that means we'll never be able to see or touch one in real life. Unless we move to Europe, that is. Still, this new Chevrolet concept car is so cool, we just had to share it with you all. Behold, the Chevrolet WTCC Ultra Concept.

Yes, we know it's a hatch. And yes, we understand that some of you "muscle" types are pissed that we chose to feature this hatch over a Camaro concept… but when a car is this forward-thinking and cool, we can't help but share our giddiness with the entire interweb.

Here's another statement that is sure to piss off the muscle heads, only we didn't come up with it. The WTCC Ultra's design chief, David Lyon, had this to say about the car:

"We wanted to explore the concept of a Chevrolet muscle car reinvented for Europe."

That's right: the Europeans consider this to be a Chevrolet muscle car. Sure, its engine may not boast 8-cylinders or an insane amount of cubic inches, but it can sure flex in all the right places.

For those not familiar with any racing series other than NACSAR, "WTCC" stands for "World Touring Car Championship". The WTCC is real "stock car" racing, as all the cars in the series are actually based off of real production cars. These chassis may be tweaked to within a millimeter of their lives, but each car is still built around a vehicle you can buy off of a dealer showroom. Oh yeah, WTCC is also superior to NASCAR because the WTCC cars turn both left and right. There! We said it!

Chevrolet's current WTCC car has been doing well in the WTCC series, with its most recent win in the Czech Republic. The WTCC Ultra Concept you see here is set up to be the next-generation of Chevrolet-built WTCC race car, and it truly was a worldwide effort. Engineers in the U.S. and Australia worked on the materials and overall design of the car; the engine was built in Korea, and the whole thing was assembled in Japan. This car literally traveled all over the world before it made its international debut at the Paris Motor Show.

The radically-sculpted body is made out of carbon fiber and fiberglass, which helps to keep the car's weight down. It's a good thing that this car doesn't weigh much: its engine is actually pretty weak. While the current Chevrolet WTCC car has a 280 hp four-banger, the WTCC Ultra Concept you see here is powered by a 2.0-liter common-rail diesel engine that is said to be good for 190 horsepower. This engine is slated to be fit into the production version of the Chevrolet Captiva SUV, so we're guessing that the WTCC Ultima was designed to draw attention to this engine...

As cool as the exterior of the WTCC Ultima Concept is, the interior is actually cooler. The cockpit of the WTCC Ultima Concept is like a work of modern art. Bold shapes and clean lines abound in this thing, and Chevy UK says that this cockpit is as ergonomic as a regular passenger car. It's kind of hard to believe that, but if Chevy UK wants to invite us out to sit in the thing so that we may possibly change our minds, we're more than willing to come out.

And that brings us to our last point about the car: it's actually fully-functional. Provided you can get this car past GM's security, you can supposedly drive the snot out of this thing -- unlike the majority of most showcars. Good luck convincing GM to give you the keys...

Since we can't make it out to Paris to see this car in person, let's glue our eyes to our monitors and check out more photos of the WTCC Ultima Concept by going on over to our Media Page!

hmm...racing steering wheel, racing shifter, and the hand-brake is in the same position as most of GM's vehicles.

mhm but a racing wheel and a racing shifter are not super useful on a slow car it just becomes kind of inconvient for everyday driving. It mich like a pistol grip shifter, looks kinda cool and works great on the drag stip, but i think its going to be useless around town.

                            Re: A new Chevrolet

It's built as a concept car using full on WRC Rally performance bits. Consider that the only vehicles competing in WRC Competition that are sold in the US are the Mitsubishi EVO and Subaru WRX STi and you get a much better idea what this thing is aimed at. Ford makes a very hot version of the Focus RS in Europe that recently beat out the Golf GTI, which is saying quite a bit, and they field a full on WRC Rally racer based on it. Peugeot, Citroen and Skoda also compete at the top level of this motorsport. Kind of odd though that GM has developed a concept vehicle along these lines since they don't compete in the series at all. I think there is only a single privateered Opel running in one of the feeder series to the WRC, but that's it.

Yeah, maybe not 8 cylinders, but 2.0 liters with forced induction making 300HP in a small car, with all wheel drive, ain't no slouch either!!!

are you talking about the Ford Mondeo ST220?

I am kind of doubting that the car will be that fast because they can only run so much boost before they start running into problems.
