  • Grit Guard Dolly...I made my own...

    Hello all,

I was looking into purchasing a Grit Guard dual bucket dolly and it would have been extremely expensive. I don't detail for profit, so spending that much money ($100-$150 Canadian) for something so simple was not something I could ever justify. So I did the next best thing...I made my own! Although it's not as fancy as the real dolly system, it's extremely solid and it definitely gets the job done. It cost me in total $35 Canadian so I'm not complaining. It's made with 2x4's and it has 6 wheels under it. For some extra protection I even put some wood varnish on it so that the water doesn't penetrate into the wood too much. Here it is in all its glory.

That's pretty impressive......and saved some $$$$ as well. You gotta love that! How were you able to get the 8 small pieces on top that actually hold the buckets curved like that? I looks like you routered some of the 2x4 pieces on the frame but I was curious how you got those smaller pieces curved like that.

Nice... not a bad idea, I have wanted one but I don't want to spend the money either, even in USD. I have been looking for a substitute but no luck yet.

I basically used a jigsaw and cut the 2x4 into the shape you see there, nothing more fancy than that.

Nice handy work! You've definitely got some talent when it comes to working with wood and taking an idea and making it happen

Speaking of wash buckets, grit guards and dolly's, I just picked up one of these cool buckets from The Container Store.com for $19.95. It appears to be a nice bucket, but I haven't put it to much use as of yet and I don't know how well the casters will hold up on cement, pavement, etc. It does however roll nicely on our wood flooring . I don't think it will hold up nearly as well as your's, but it was quick and easy for me to get and I wanted to try something new. The inside diamater of this bucket measures 17.25 long X 9.25 wide X 9.5 deep. The top of the grit guard is 1.5 inches from the bottom of the bucket. For the SoCal guys, there's a Container Store by South Coast Plaza, but they have a store locator on their web site if you want to see one in person. Here's a pic of my new rolling bucket that comes with its own grit guard.

How did you shape the verticle pieces of wood on top? Did you soak the wood in a solution and jig it or did you steam bend it or was it cut that way?

Did you use a table scroll saw or did you make the cuts by hand with a jig saw, etc?

I'd like to make one someday

Nice work!!! I've always thought of buying a bucket dolly, but I don't have a flat driveway. So, I imagine my wash bucket would just roll away.

I basically just cut them by hand with a jigsaw and then glued them. Once I was done, I just applied a polyurethane varnish with a brush.
